Good starting point for learning Lua
This book is a good starting point for leaning Lua. However I would have liked to see more discussion of how to figure out what Lua config files are doing. I use apps that require me to maintain Lua files and that can be challenging.

An enjoyable companion to Ierusalimschy's classic
I recently read Ierusalimschy's "Programming in Lua" and, while it is thorough and precise, sometimes I'd miss the big picture because of the very detailed description of every small feature of the language. Gellis's book, on the other hand, is a bit more practical and high-level, which helped me finally understand some difficult concepts (e.g., closures). Gellis's coverage of metatables was also very helpful. I really enjoyed this book and thinks it works well as an introduction to Lua or as a quick review after reading Ierusalimschy's book.
