Two thumbs -up, big smiles and satisfying feelings inside
I can say this is a great and unexpected treasure of a movie that’s so cool on so many levels I don’t know where to start, but let’s start with the time in history … super cool fashion, cars and hustle of a young teenager who hustles ever opportunity to earn in the most creative and cool ways. There’s also a lot of great actresses and actors in this movie to my surprise, it’s entertaining, fun and positive energy with some twists and unexpected turns. Two thumbs -up, big smiles and satisfying feelings inside

Freewheeling Coming of Age Story
Set in a kind of "in-between" moment; for the country, for Hollywood, and for the main characters, the movie is best viewed as a wistful homage to the feeling that "all things are possible." The year is 1973 which is around the same time that Cameron Crowe's class "Almost Famous" takes place and many respects has a very similar feeling. There is nostalgia for sure, but not to the point of sugarcoating how life really was. It's a time that was just past the more sunny and optimistic 1960s, but nowhere near the darkness of Taxi Driver and other movies from the later 70s.The general contours of the story are based on friends of the director during this era, and one in particular that is like a born showman/salesman: 15 year old Gary is charming, quick on his feet, always looking for the next hustle and especially hoping to seem a lot more "grown up" than he actually was. This especially comes out when he falls hard for Alana, a 25-year-old photographer's assistant, at his school picture day. She is put off by his invitation to dinner that evening, but shows up anyway. And the thing is, he DOES seem older in most ways, especially since he's traveled extensively as a child actor.Period details abound, and how much you connect to them will all come down to your own age. As a child of the 70s, seeing the long lines to the gas stations, and the hilarious waterbed store Gary and Alana mange to open brought back a lot of memories. As in most PT Anderson films the cinematography and music are perfectly aligned with what's happening in the story, and the ensemble cast is excellent.
