The style trivialises the subject
I have had a chronic disease for the past 35-years and there is some indication that the disease is linked to the gut microbiome so it's a subject that I have more than a passing interest in. I saw this and decided to buy sight unseen and I really wish I hadn't. In his Forward, Tim Spector says that the authors: "... showed a unique talent not just for processing complicated scientific concepts but for translating them to a non-scientific audience in a fun and highly informative manner."Well, I don't find: "We say "gut" - you say "what" - "gut" - "what"... stay with us" which is the introductory line to chapter 1 "fun" or "informative." Maybe I am the wrong generation and it's an "in" joke that someone who is "down with the kids" will get - but I am not that person. There is a section called: "modern studies and politics" which contains a graphic about the "hierarchy of evidence." It could be really useful - if it were fully explained - but it's not.Page 41, the "gut-brain axis tennis match" I just didn't understand. Well, not true. I understood each of the points made but I didn't understand in what way the authors needed to present the information as a tennis match. I could perhaps have understood the form of presentation if the "players" were adopting opposing points of view and each 'shot' built an argument leaving the reader to balance their respective points of view - but it was more of a combined narrative with one shot building on the next. Frankly, I'd have appreciated more substance and less "fun."Page 49 - Breathwork with Dr Rabia - I felt so sorry for the lady who wrote this section. Reading it was like listening to an interview on the news where you know that the interview was much longer and had more substance, only to have it edited back to a couple of out of context soundbites. I am sure that Dr. Rabia did her best with the task she was given but, again, I found myself wanting more content, more context, more information.I am sure that there are plenty of people who will enjoy the authors' prose and will benefit from reading it. I just find their style intensely frustrating.Hopefully, our local charity shop will find someone more appreciative of this book than me.

Sensible and informative
I hesitated before purchasing this book, I bought my copy from another seller and not amazon at a better price. I purchased the gut stuff diary from amazon. The book is expensive however for me who has tried every diet and healthy eating plan under the sun, this book is a return to common sense and an aid to being more relaxed around food. The information is clear and concise. The recipes are interesting and helpful but not essential. I highly recommend this book plus the diary which is sold separately - expensive I know but the value is in the fact that I have benefited already from purchasing these items and by following their tips for a healthy lifestyle. Stuff we already sort of know but..........., for me the up beat tone of the book is a definite help and the diary(purchased separately) is very simple to complete .
