If you prefer to have your garage door opener Not blow off in high winds, or fall down due to sticky tape failing in high temp heat, than securing it with 2 screws provided is best recommended. The answer to your question "do I HAVE to screw the back in?" is No, you don't Have to (no one can force you to do anything after all). You can use chewing gum etc. to try attaching it if that's what you "choose" to do, but as with not following all installation recommendations, there are consequences as a result.
