This was a gift for my grandson. He's been playing with it all day so I think I can give it a good review based on that

I am not a fan, but I bought this as a toy for my 10 year old. He still plays with my 40 year old original Optimus Prime that is built to last and easy and intuitive to transformI had the toys as a Gen X kid, and they were awesome and well-built, and designed for kids. The sad fact is that with kids these days largely being given unlimited screen time, the toy market has shrunk considerably, and the industry has shifted to targeting collectors as their main customer, and the design of the product reflects that. They are both more cheaply made and way more expensive, which is crazy.This line of toys in general, and this in particular, is almost 100% plastic. The instructions that come with it are monochromatic and not great- there are adjustments, twists of small parts, and manipulations that are not obvious. In my opinion, it is a REQUIREMENT that you watch a video on how to transform it, and you need to accept that it will always feel a bit janky and flimsy when handled.The reason for this is that they are not INTENDED to be handled- they are intended to be posed and left on a shelf, if they are even taken out of the box. These things become a commodity in a nostalgia marketplace when enough time has passed and scarcity created, and as such, their functionality is kind of an afterthought, toy-wise. You will see this on a shelf with other IP from different Anime, games, or comics, owned by a man in his late twenties or older. As a toy this is a fail- my kid got so frustrated trying to follow the woefully inadequate that he insisted that I return it, and went back to enjoying OG Optimus. After I followed the video and got it into car shape, it didn't feel good as a toy because the various connection points are so flimsy that it kept coming... untransformed? to some degree. Like I said, it's meant to be posed, not played with. For that purpose, it's okay, I guess. But I suspect a lot of parents buy these for young kids and then it becomes a piece of unused junk in a toy box really fast, and that is the review I am writing here.I am, obviously, a little salty about all of it. I can not, for the life of me, understand why they don't remake the old toys. The designs were great, they all worked and were very popular, and seemingly the original toys are in high demand based on the collector's market I sadly discovered in looking into writing a thoughtful review. I purchased this for over 50$, which made me really think hard about how much the licensing fee must have been, because the material cost was NOT high. I came to believe that in the old days, the toy companies made the cartoons as advertisements for the toys, and as such, owned the IP? Nowadays there must be just a licensing department of some conglomerate that owns all the Hasbro stuff that contracts various 3rd party vendors to produce content and products in conjunction with whatever monstrosity Michael Bey operates in conjunction with. Ahhh, late-stage capitalism. You make everything incrementally worse again and again in a relentless search for the absolute minimum quality that will still generate revenue to momentarily inflate shareholder value for the .5%. Good Times.Transformers Toys for Kids (HAH!) and 5 Minutes Toy are two youtube creator channels that have videos on how to transform this stuff, so save yourself some frustration if you buy this and want it to transform.

My grandson loves this toy.

Very good build quality, and a fun toy in general. But the transformation is very difficult. My 3 1/2 year old cannot do it, and my five year old will still bring it to me to do on occasion. I think my eight year old has it down, but prefers to play with others that are easier to transform.

This lights up and has sound. The grand kid really likes it.

My 9 yr old got this for Christmas- and was so bummed when it broke 1 day in. It was in the car form and accidentally dropped from about a foot high onto a rug, and broke where the arm connects. Gluing the joint wouldn't hold up because it was the peg itself that broke, so he just plays with it as a one arm transformer. We've had a lot of transformers, so he knows that the more complex, the more you have to mind the parts... I just would not have thought that minor of an accident would render it unrepairable, and for how pricey these are now, I'm a bit bummed.
