Get the plastic out! ;-)
One of the best lenses I own. I used to drool at the 85mm 1.2 but with all the reviews online regarding speed of af I just knew it wouldn't be for me. This lens is amazing, nails the focus and image and colours are beautiful. Don't give it a second thought! Has to be one of canons best...

AF is not reliable and CA very noticeable
I bought this to compliment my 135 F2, sadly the image stabilizer ( which was quiet & didn't make a clunking noise when switched on) actually seemed to introduce unusual circular blur on shots between 125th - 320th! I tried it on 2 Canon 5D mk3 bodies, both showed problems. I would also get errattic focus on still subjects even at 3m in good light with apertures of f2.8/4. I get no problems with my 70-200 IS.I bought this for portraiture, shooting at 3m, often f2/2.8 @ 160th. I found I got more keepers with my 135 @ f2 at a metre further back and that has a very similar aesthetic. I'd recommend the 135 F2 if you have space, or a 70-200 IS instead of this lens. I also have the 35 F1.4 mk2 which is stunning for it's wide open af accuracy and high resolution quality optics, it's also much more versatile than I though it would be. The 35 f1.4 has negligible CA, whereas this 85 F1.4 has lots of green & purple diffuse washes of CA as well as the regular highlight CA fringing. When it hit focus, in bright contrasty light, it was very impressive but was let down by frustrating focus inconsistency in shade, or soft light, particularly when used for portraiture.I used silent shutter low drive on my Canon 5Dmk3s, and this introduced an odd circular blur that occurred on every other frame of a sequence I shot. I probably got a dud, others love this lens but I felt uneasy relying on it, so I returned it.I expect a lens of this calibre to nail af accurately at f2.8 with a static subject in open shade at 2.5/3.5 metres, just like my 135 f2 does @f2 from any distance...it didn't.
