Q: Would this be considered 'light-proof'? I.e. Would the contents be totally in the dark? I need to store spices and they can't be exposed to sunlight.

There would be some tiny gaps where the doors are that may let light in. When I reviewed this item I said it had a ridiculous number of parts, which it does and it is over-priced for what it is - it's not great quality. The back is made of plastic that is very like corrugated cardboard! You'd get a cheaper, better quality similar item in B&Q.

Not on the one we have - it’s black plastic. Unit is well made and was easy to assemble. To date - we have had ours for 3+ years - and had no issues with water ingress. However it is located partially under a glass canopy.

Q: Can some shelves be removed without compromising the unit's sturdiness? Or do you have to have all shelves?

Apologies for this late response to your question but, Ive just returned from vacation. The system works by folding away the shelves that are not required so it should not compromise the sturdiness.

Yes, it breaks easily. I threw mine out.
