Belgian Malinois resistant
This trash can is absolutely, astonishingly overkill for most scenarios. Do you need it? Probably not. But if you do need it, this is a superb product. We had the regular clamshell trashcan. The problem was our Belgian Malinois would sneakily run regular sorties to raid the trash can, steal whatever inedible but delightful smelling item had been thrown in there, and sneak off to the garage area to enjoy it at her own leisure. Many a trip home we discovered a dog with an upset stomach, having eaten something that should not have been eaten, only to be ejected in the most unpleasant manner a day or two later after many groans and farts that would be considered inhumane torture by the United Nations. The problem was that she'd stick her nose under the lid and flip it up, revealing the contents for her perusal and refined selection.I tried, I intervened, I relocated, I pleaded, I begged to no avail for those items to be thrown directly into the outside bin. The moisture absorbent packs went in. Smelly toys were tossed in there. Sometimes food would follow.Eventually I found myself with some additional funding and thought to myself, "Big dog only needs to be hospitalized once for a luxury can to pay for itself." So I did the luxurious thing and bought this can as buttefly lid openings are one way to prevent the lid from being opened by a curious muzzle. On receiving it, I immediately threw a delicious smelling moisture absorbing pack from ground meat in there, followed by some old bones, a tennis ball, and effectively a smorgasbord of her favorite goodies, leaving her alone with the can to resolve their differences for several days. It worked! Despite her efforts, she was unable to coax the can into opening in a way that she could steal from it.Now we've had it for some time, what can I say? We use the Costco trash bags with this, and they stretch to fit the bin insert perfectly. The mechanisms controlling the butterfly actuation are completely hidden from items being thrown in, so if you have a significant other who likes throwing peanuts in there, it won't eventually jam the mechanism. The mechanism has a hold open mode for convenience, and the lid is Belgian Malinois Muzzle resistant to being flipped open (nothing is ever Belgian Malinois proof). The added height also means it's easier to swipe your hands over the sensor, and not lean down too far to do it.Downsides? The price. The 6xAA batteries isn't an issue, we've been using it multiple times daily with no problems. Probably lifting off the automated mechanism is the only slightly tricky thing, I can see someone breaking the lid if carelessly replacing the bag, but I get around that by putting it in the "hold open" mode, lifting it off, and resetting it when I'm done replacing the bag.Really, the only thing that stopped me before was the price. If my dog ate just one item that didn't pass all the way through, that vet bill would dwarf the cost of the trashcan. This luxurious purchase is as much insurance as it is functional, but it's also just a really good trashcan.

A good trashcan
I wanted a replacement trashcan for an older manual "step on a pedal to raise the lid" trashcan. The old trashcan was kind of a pain since it never did hold the bags very well, the bags never allowed me to get a "full load" and every time I opened it it tended to scoot across the floor. It was not soft close and you could hear the "bang" with every use. This trashcan by comparison is GREAT. The first thing I noticed is the weight. This can is substantial. The next surprise was that the outer shell is not where the trash is being stored. Inside the shell, there is a substantial inner plastic trash can. This slips inside the outer shell. This has been great. The bag is stretched across the top and it hold the entire contents of the tag to the full 13 gallon capacity.I've tried both Hefty Strong bags with a drawstring and Costco Kirkland Flex-Tech with drawstring trash bags and have had no troubles. Simple take out the inner can, stretch the bag over the top and then put the inner can into the outer shell. Reverse that process when it is time to empty it. No issues. I have not tried other types of bags. The motion sensor is working for me and I have had no issues. My dog regularly opens the can using the motion sensor so keep that in mind if that is an issue for you. My dog triggers the opening and then moves away and the can closes after 5 seconds. The motor does kind of sounds like it struggles, but perhaps this is how it is supposed to sound. It has been working for me without any problems. It is convenient to have a "keep the door open" button and I only use this when I'm changing the bag.So no complaints. It exceeded my expectations and has worked well for me and addresses all of the issues I had with my old can. The trashcan does have a 5 year warranty so keep those receipts (you can download them from Amazon) and register your product on the Rubbermaid website using the "Product registration form" link at the bottom of their web page. Warranty information is also downloadable from the product page on the Rubbermaid site too.

Piece of poorly designed junk
This got one star because you have to give it a star to review it. DON'T buy this it is a waste of money, the design is horrible, the battery cover is over the garbage can portion, so when it fell off and went withe the trash because the batteries didn't fall out right away. Forget the five year warranty, they ignore you when you ask for support, right it's sitting in my kitchen with the lid open, I'm sorry I purchased this and would not recommend it. Customer service is horrible and Rubber Maid should be ashamed.

You don’t even need to touch it to throw out your trash
This device is my main kitchen wastebasket. I purchased it after my 30-year-old Rubbermaid pedal operated wastebasket finally expired. This takes the same 13 gallon trash bags in a much neater container. To throw out trash, you hold it over sensor at one end of the wastebasket. After a second or so, two doors pop open, you throw in your trash and the doors close again. If you need to, you can make the doors stay open longer by tapping a symbol on the sensor; one to open them and another to close them. The trash bag is completely hidden, since the basket it attaches to is inside the container. To empty it, you remove the automatic top and pull out the inner basket. Pop a new trash bag over it and put the whole thing back together. The whole thing looks neat and clean, and will be one of the few things that will open when you decide it should open. I like this product.
