Q: Will this torch work with propane?

Yes, I use it with oxygen and propane for lampworking.

Q: will this work for hvac work ?

Yes, But keep in mind that you need the largest tips available, and it is not really big enough for any pipe larger than about 7/8 inch. There is a separate Heating Tip (third Party?) available that works for bigger pipes, it works for up to 1 1/8" pipe, but a regular sized torch outfit works better for anything above about 3/4". For smaller pipe this is The Best, and I use it for 90% of my torch work, Very Nice to use and holds up well for nearly all Refrigeration work, and can get into places a regular sized torch cannot. Highly recommended for any work with 3/4" or smaller piping.
