Great way to get into a great setting
I really like the soloquest book that comes with it. That more then anything made me understand the rules. And the Glorantha setting is a breath of fresh air after reading so many generic fantasy settings. Highly recommend if you don't mind crunchy systems and want something different.

The quality and quantity of material in this starter is above and beyond the best I've seen in any other starter. Chaosium is known now for having very high quality products for entry into their biggest properties, but this is a standout for sure.

Gorgeous, but unplayable
I bought five copies of this starter set directly from Chaosium for me and my gamers, hoping to teach them how to play one of my (past) favorite role-playing games. I saw that the set was for sale here on Amazon, and I figured that my friends here could benefit from an honest review.I want to be completely transparent that it pains me to give a two-star review to one of my favorite gaming systems (past) of all time.Bottom-line Up-front, the starter kit is gorgeous, and it contains reams of information about the gaming world, Glorantha, but it comes up significantly short on ensuring that players and the gamemaster understand how to play, or have the ability to play even slightly outside the lines of the pre-gen characters and module. One of the core concepts in role-playing games is that it is a tapestry, an interactive story told by the gamemaster and players. This starter set (that rolls in at $30) has material on the pre-gen character sheets that is not explained anywhere in the rules. In a fight, and starter sets have fights in the scenarios as this is a selling point for the RuneQuest (RQ) system, one of my characters defeated an adversary and wanted to pick up the weapon that villain was using. We could not figure out the basic stats for the found weapon enough for the player character to use it. There is a system of affiliations and affinities with various cosmic forces, e.g., earth, air, fire, water, and the players are supposed to use these affiliations to help guide their characters' actions. How? No clue. By the way, weapons break in the gritty world of Glorantha. How much does the local blacksmith charge to repair or replace your broken weapon. No idea in this starter set.On to the Dr Games’ Criteria …GO/NO GO Criterion• Complexity: (NO GO): RQ used to be a game that was comfortably on the line between playable and "crunchy." This new version, even in the starter set, has fallen in the morass of complexity for flavor's sake. My players and I were unable to sort out what much on the pre-gen character sheets meant, and I have been playing versions of RQ for over 40 years.• Balanced: (NO GO) RQ is deadly as it has critical hits, specific hit locations, and fumbles. Starting characters are always fragile, and this is ever so much more true in RQ:G. There might have been more balance if a seasoned group of players had been around the table who knew RQ:G inside and out, but that is an unrealistic expectation for a starter set. Of the four characters, three died during that initial session. No one wanted to restart the module and try again.• Chance (GO) The use of percentile dice for skills and combat is fine.• Clarity: (NO GO) The included rules and other source books were lavishly illustrated, but at the end of the day, my group could not figure out how to play or use the material on the character sheets.• Reasonable Time: (GO) RQ:G is a role-playing game. This one takes no more and no less than other games in the same genre.Bonus Criteria• Social: The complexities in the RQ:G system and the complete intertwining with the world of Glorantha, which is extremely different than Earth, almost ensures that there will be a constant stream of rules lawyering and disagreements about gaming world effects.• Unique/Interesting Mechanics: There were some. I like the ability to combine skills if both of them apply to increase your chances of success. In the magic section, they have a mechanic where spending more time to cast a spell increases your chances of success. Both of these are nice adds to the rules.• Informed: You can potentially learn a lot about the imaginary world of Glorantha.• Rewards Throughout: Yes, your player characters are rewarded every time they successfully swing a sword or us a skill.• Additional Considerations: I thought that maybe I was missing the point with RQ:G. I turned to on-line fora to explore both RQ:G in general and the starter set in particular. I was castigated for not embracing the lack of clarity and wallowing in the complexity. I was told repeatedly that once I shelled out $120+ for the slipcover set, I would see that the long, grueling character creation process was the Raison d'être of the whole game. Honestly, I was floored. This is not a game that I will be able to get one of my gaming groups to play.Sadly, I cannot recommend this game, and I hope that the good folks at Chaosium will see fit to introduce a more streamlined version of the game that might have a wider audience appeal.

Great Starer Set for a Great Game!
Chaosium does amazing products. I've played RPG's for almost 40 years but never tried out Runequest. I've heard great things about it and figured this was a cheap way to try it out. This is an excellent value for an excellent starter set! It comes loaded and costs under $30 bucks. Four booklets... one with rules; one with a solo adventure; one with a brief but extensive tresses on the world, gods, politics, etc; and one with a full adventure and adventure hooks. There are dice, beautiful maps and you have a nice, heavy box. If you are familiar with the Call of Cthulhu RPG the rules are similar, but (oddly) this system does seem a hybrid between 7th edition CoC and earlier editions of that game. That, to be fair is a bit confusing. I'll throw in, that Chaosium's YouTube channel had a nice playthrough for the group adventure included here in, and that answered the few questions I had. Great product, great game. Absolutely five stars!
