A non-enthusiast perspective
I’m not a surge protector/power strip “enthusiast” by any means. I don’t partake in the surge protector discourse, and I don’t feel I hold the esteem to call myself a part of the surge protector community, so this is by all means a layman’s review: I love this thing. My surge protectors before this were all ugly beige strips with a short cord and a single power switch, and likely bought before 2005 (family hand-me-downs from when I moved out. Probably not safe in hindsight). I know there are more premium ones than this, but for the price, and somewhat knowing the reliability of the brand, I couldn’t be happier with this. Love having usb ports (again, I know that’s not unique), love the indicator LEDs (which I assume are not just for show), love the amount of outlets in varying directions, and love the length of the cord. Really, I’m just beaming internallyUnless this thing causes unspeakable damage and distress somehow, e.g. by failing and catching fire or the like, this will be one of my top five purchases based on price-to-utility value alone. On that note, if any experts could tell me if there’s anything unsafe about my arrangement, I’d really love to ensure the damage and distress thing stays hypothetical

The best non expensive protection
Excellent surge protection. If it’s hit , it will stop working so you know not to keep using it.

No issues. Good outlet layout.
Powerstrip works exactly as expected. I enjoy the layout of the outlets, and it lets me plug everything in exactly how I want. A few wider outlets for the wider plugs, and plenty of narrower ones for the common plugs.

Reputation for reliability, high number of joules.
I bought the Tripp Lite 12 outlet surge protector for the two reasons mentioned in the title. Tripplite has a long standing reputation and I went for that as opposed to the cheaper brands. I am protecting close to $5000 worth of electronic equipment and I feel more comfortable with a name brand. There are a few others out there but the unit had the features (like layout of the outlets) and capacity at a good price. It all tends to be a bit of a guessing game, but I would recommend this brand or a few others well known for their quality. This is a situation where cheaping out may not be a good idea.......

Slow (cat 5) cable included.
The true value of this is if everything is fine after a near lighting strike. I live in Florida so I might not have to wait too long.BUT.... it's easy enough to miss, hoping I might save someone the trouble - THE ETHERNET CABLE PROVIDED IS ONLY CAT 5.For those of you who don't know what that means, it's limited to 100 MBS. We were trying to figure out why our network seemed data capped all of a sudden. A lot of people who need a surge protector will get higher wifi speed than through this cable.

Most Bang for the Buck
I have Tripp-Lite protecting all my small kitchen electrics and also a digital piano, but Belkin surge protectors on my TVs and home theater equipment. Recently, my main TV came unplugged overnight — which was strange because the plugs are behind an entertainment center and it had been working when I last used it. When I went behind the entertainment center to fix it, I found another item that I assumed was unplugged but was actually still plugged into the Belkin but but no longer powered. I moved the TV and as many of the components to a small surge protector and then ordered this 12-outlet replacement. I was initially annoyed that despite being a PRIME member shipping was expected to take a week, but fortunately I was able to receive this ahead of schedule.I was skeptical that all 12 outlets could be used once the AC adapters were in place, but everything in my entertainment center hooked up to this surge protector. Upon removing the old Belkin, I literally heard debris rattling around inside. Apparently it had taken a big hit and did its job but instead of completely dying was continuing to give the appearance that it was protecting my equipment. If it weren't for the bizarre fact that my TV came unplugged overnight, I might not have realized what was going on. (Probably saved my expensive SONY TV.)In the Customer Q&A one thing that caught my attention about this product is that it is no longer expected to run once the surge protection capacity is expended. That's a plus because on many surge protectors they continue to operate like power strips even after they no longer have the capacity to protect attached equipment. All three LED lights on my Belkin — red, green and yellow were illuminated but it continued to operate to the endangerment of connected equipment. And since I couldn't see the LEDs behind my entertainment center, I missed the fact that it was no longer doing its job. This Tripp-Lite arrived in the nick of time. It's the highest-rated joules (>4,000) I could find for the price with the most amount of receptacles. Initially I was debating an upgrade to a power conditioner and Automatic Voltage Regulator but none of them had enough outlets and I was cautioned about daisy chaining a surge protector to the back of an AVR. I then very nearly went with Furman (brand used by musicians) but despite describing their products as "line conditioners" their joule ratings were lower (or in some cases not even published) and the RFI/EMF specs weren't any better than Tripp-Lite. All in all, I think this was the most bang for the buck.

Quality and features!
The Tripp-lite Protect IT TLP128TTUSB Surge Protector is a good value. The surge protector is rated at 4320 Joules (the higher the number, the more protection it offers). The 12 outlets are nicely spaced for power adapters and standard power cables. There are two USB ports for charging phones, headphones etc. People seem to mistake the phone ports for ethernet, this surge protector does not have ethernet ports! With typical Tripp-lite quality, the TLP128TTUSBB offers good protection. This replaced power strips that were overloaded and offered no surge protection. It is recommended to get a good surge protector to prevent damage to expensive electronics.
