Q: I've used nikwax's tx direct for hard and soft shells with no probs. why should i buy the soft shell proof instead?

All of the nikwax is formulated slightliy differently to stick to different types of fabric. softshell material is slightly thinner and stretchier than hardshell faberic, so softshell wash in will work better than a hardshell wash in. However if you are trying to put a hardshell in and a softshell in the wash at the same time to make it more efficient, it will probably work.

Q: Would this work on a non-Gore Tex lined nylon parka?

This product is designed to work on soft shell jackets (like a stretchable polyester material) however it may still work on nylon. I would suggest checking out the regular NikWax TX Direct Spray-on which is designed for materials that are more like your nylon jacket.

Q: Did anyone try it on cotton or poly-cotton? I know it's not designed for that, but I'm curious since I have this one.

Not sure. I tried it on my son's jacket (Poly-cotton) didn't work but when I put it on my underarmer pants (84% polyester)It work but for sure cotton won't work

Q: I see that there is a spray-on and a wash-in option for this product. is one better than the other? should i use both?

I have used both, and they both work great! I recommend to Use both to get maximum results.
