Q: It’s this a good trumpet for beginners?

No. It is terrible. Hard to get a good tone. Impossible actually. The very worst trumpet I have ever played including one with a severe dent in the curve before the bell. Airy. Intonation is bad.

Q: Can you use this mute with a pocket trumpet?

yes it can be muted with normal mute. Bell is same as full size trumpet

Q: Do valves require oil?

Arrived pre-oiled. You could use standard trumpet valve oil if you want, but so far, it seems unnecessary. The valves and the valve linings are ABS plastic, so there's no chance of corrosion. I would just play it as it is.
