Great southern rock from an "under-known" band!
I first discovered these guys after reading about Kim Davis, whom I knew was in a band with Stevie Ray Vaughan when they were teenagers (Blackbird). At that time, by all accounts Kim was basically SRV's equal when it came to his abilities on the fretboard, so naturally my curiosity about Mr. Davis was piqued! I found out that he played with Point Blank in the 70's and early 80's, and being a huge fan of southern rock, I snapped up this two-fer CD in a second...I am not disappointed! This is great stuff, and since I'm a southern rock fan from way back, I'm disappointed that I never knew about these guys sooner, as Point Blank harkens to a sound made more famous by Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet. John O'Daniel features some great vocal abilities including amazing range with a gruffness in his voice that is reminiscient of early Johnny Winter, but fuller. He cuts back nicely on the grit during the softer parts of songs, almost to the point of sounding like a totally different singer...lol! One other member (it might be Davis) also chimes in a few times on some lead vocals with a smoother but excellent delivery, and some songs feature fine harmonies. The lyrics don't exactly possess the ingenuity and imagery of classic Skynyrd songs by the late great lyricist Ronnie Van Zant, but the power of the music makes up for it. The twin guitars of Davis and Rusty Burns prove to be a formidable pairing, each possessing talent that is on par with any southern rock band! While Davis as a guitar player obviously did not reach heights of notoriety that his famous ex-bandmate Vaughan did, it is clear that his talent was never overrated by other bandmates who were with both Vaughan and Davis in the Blackbird days.Sadly, Kim Davis is no longer with us, so I am glad that I was able to grab this CD of Point Blank's first two albums before it goes out of print! iTunes does not sell these...just one or two of the band's later offerings, which were more geared to AOR radio in the early 80's...pffft!...not for me! Though Point Blank's greatest commercial success was achieved with their later AOR material (most notably the hit single "Nicole") they ironically now promote themeselves on their website as back to being a southern rock band, probably because interest in the old classic southern rock of the 70's has been greater in the last two decades than early 80's AOR...face it, it's just more timeless music! :-)The sound quality of the first album is very good, and somewhat better than the second for some reason, but the second one is still overall good, especially when compared to CD's that I have of the old Blackfoot albums, which suffer from far less than optimal transfer from analog.Highly recommended for all southern rock fans!!

Awesome!!!
Bought both LP’s when Point Blank was in early days, still got both and still play from time to time.LP’s still sound better but the convenience having both on cd, awesome! If you’ve never heard this band and you like ZZ Top your gonna love this band. Heard both in their early days and live , Billy Gibbons has always been a show in himself, but Point Blank was a better live band by far. Much fuller sound with duel lead guitars with keyboards. At the time I felt that both guitarists in Point Blank were both every bit as good as Billy Gibbons. Both great bands!

Rock In The 70s Rule!!!
POINT BLANK - POINT BLANK / SECOND SEASONThis is now a part of my 2,217 collection of albums & videos (and still counting). This is again rock music at its best! Rock In The Seventies Rules!!! In the 70s we simply called them just Hard Rock or Heavy Rock! This one is hard rock with a taste of blues. But other will call this music Southern Rock among other acts like Black Oak Arkansas Raunch 'N' Roll Live , Molly Hatchet Molly Hatchet - Greatest Hits [Expanded ], Lynyrd Skynyrd Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird The Movie / Tribute Tour , Outlaws, Blackfoot, Ozark Mt Daredevils Time Warp: The Very Best of Ozark Mountain Daredevils , Allman Brothers Band, ZZ Top & 38 Special to name a few. This is the original line-up of Point Blank. Rusty Burns on guitar, slide guitar and vocals. Kim Davis on guitar and vocals. Peter Gruen on drums and percussions. John O' Daniel on vocals and Philip Petty on the bass.Listen particularly on the songs Freeman, Moving and Wandering and you'll be looking for more Point Blank albums. I've got their album The Hard Way and this is an excellent one unfortunately there is no release in CD.Lots of good songs and lots of guitar playing in these 2 albums, so get it now before they run out of copies!

Great Two-Fer From Pro-Law-Enforcement Texas Boogie-Rockers
POINT BLANK/SECOND SEASON is a great reissue of the first two albums from the Texas Southern rock band Point Blank, whose lead guitarist, Rusty Burns, has recently come forward to advocate capital punishment for kidnappers and increased funding for law enforcement, which is less unique among Southern bands than the fact that these albums sound more like Montrose-meets-Ted-Nugent than like most Southern rock. That in itself is a great thing, since the former band's two lead members, guitarist Ronnie Montrose and vocalist Sammy Hagar, as well as Ted Nugent, advocate the same things that Burns now does, as well as having the same blues and R&B roots as the great Southern bands. This CD features some great rockers and blues numbers that hearken all the way back to Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's and Buddy Guy's wonderful 60s recordings. ALLMUSIC GUIDE's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave their later two-fer, AMERICAN EXCESS/ON A ROLL, a better review, so his kids should have to complete 600 hours of community service in order to graduate from high school because of the negative review their father gave this wonderful slab of roadhouse rock & roll barbecue. Get this CD at the first chance you can.

Great Southern Rock with a touch of the ‘Eagles’
This is an unfortunately often overlooked Southern Rock band which played great music in this genre and this double album on one CD is definitely worth checking out and is good value too. This is really a must have for fans of Southern Rock. You will wonder how on earth you missed them before.Track time just over 72 ¼ mins.

Point Blanks first two records
Formed by Bill Ham when Z.Z.Top were having a break,Point Blank produced two albums of blistering boogie;both of which are here on this 2 for 1 set.At the heart of their sound was the incendiery guitar playing of Rusty Burns and the late great Kim Davis;the latters aggresive guitar leads and savage tone complimented Burns astonishing triplets. Both records gave these two plenty of room to display their talents;higlights include "Lone Star Fool" and "Free Man" from their first album and "Uncle Ned" from their second. Both records have been well reproduced and represent a superb dose of southern boogie.

Brilliant!
...I like this band more than any other 'Southern Rock' group, including Allman Brothers. They play harder and are closer to hard British rock of 70es. Every track on this double cd is great, no fillers !
