Works great as a theft deterrent for hotels without an in-room safe
Pros:1. Solid construction2. Combination lock works well and doesn't bind upCons:1. Wish it was a 4 number combination for increased security2. Weight can be a factor for travel purposesSummaryI bought this for overseas travel where some of the hotels don't have in-room safes (or if they do, many are not bolted down and are easily removable, which renders them relatively worthless and pointless). With the included foam pads removed, the XX-Large box will easily fit 2 iPads with room to spare for car keys, etc. The cable is pretty tough looking and long enough to wrap it around and secure it without too much difficulty. The metal is pretty thick and strong. Once closed and locked, the box doesn't offer up too many weakpoints that can be exploited for prying it open. While by no means would I expect this to be impenetrable, it does offer enough to be an effective deterrent. Most thefts that would occur in a hotel is likely a quick scan-and-grab and something like this would look secure enough that the opportunistic thief will just move on. However, there are two main downsides to this lockbox. One is the 3 digit lock, which only offers 1000 combinations. I was able to go through and try all the combinations in about 20-25 minutes starting at 000 and going to 999. Unfortunately, because I set my combination at 223, I got the combination in about 4 minutes into my combination guess process. Second, the cable is tough but at only a quarter inch thick, of which some of it is the rubber coating, it could probably be easily cut.One last thing, is that for purposes of travelling and putting the box in your check luggage, the box is heavy. Its just a few ounces shy of 6 pounds. I had to remove a lot of clothes to accommodate the weight of this box. Also, I found the best way to avoid TSA messing with my luggage was to pack this lockbox in the open position with the lid fully open (the lid opens 180 degrees).

GREAT BOX....
You cannot beat this for the price. Its sturdy, well finished with a decent lock mechanism. The cable it comes with IS coated so some of the pictures or videos found online with a plain exposed cable are not current or correct from the model I received. This fits my SA XDS 45 perfectly with just enough rom for a spare mag if need be. Cable it to a seat post in your vehicle and donePROS - Well made solid steel box, not flimsy- Surprisingly easy to use combo mechanism- Coated cableCONS - needs a 4 number combo instead of 3- nothing is full proof securityHope this helps anyone looking to buy this, its well worth it...

A great box for our EDC guns, when we lawfully have to leave them behind.
First the sellers review of Broadway Knives FIVE STARS ***** . a competitive price, shipped via FedEX almost immediately, and the lock box arrived sooner then I expected, Thank you! It is nice to see customer service that values it shoppers. This is a great box, I have two, one keyed and this one with the combo. This is a really well made strong box. My only concern is the hinge pin on the outside of the safe, hence 4 stars for sturdiness. Its not a deal breaker as most thieves wouldn't have the tools necessary to get the pin out. Bolt cutters maybe, but the cable would take time to cut through too and in reality I'm not going to use this a set and forget storage option. Its in my car, hidden for when I have to leave our EDC's for a few minutes and still monitor the car.

Great little mechanical safe
Everyone needs to decide for themselves what their needs and preferences are. There are various small gun safes available: biometric (e.g. fingerprint scanner), electronic (e.g. finger buttons to punch in a series of numbers or a pattern), traditional keyed (flat-shaped key), round keyed (round-shaped key), padlock (room to mount a padlock), or a mechanical combination lock like this one (using 3-5 rotating tumblers). If you've decided on a mechanical (as oppose to electronic) safe, this one is excellent. For the price, this safe is a no-brainer. It costs about the same as a box of quality ammo, and provides decent security against unauthorized access. However, a word of caution: This particular model wouldn't be ideal for a shared common area with adults, or in a location where an older child could access it. With enough time on their hands, a curious teen or thief could quite easily start at 000 and roll through the numbers to 999 testing each until they found the combination. While that might sound silly, it would only take a few hours total. For me, I decided this safe was the best for my needs. It's quiet and doesn't feature beeping buttons, it's mechanical so batteries won't fail me, it fits both my semi-auto and a snub-nosed revolver for the wife, and the 3-digit combination is easy to remember. The only complaint I have about this safe is the way they shrouded (or failed to shroud) the locking mechanism. They just cut a rectangular space in the foam and smooshed it down. I would have preferred that the locking mechanism actually be shielded by a piece of shaped sheet metal. It's hard to describe in words, but it looks like the safe could-- over time-- have locking problems if that foam ever creeped into the area where the lock is located and gummed up the mechanism. I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm keeping the safe. I like it.
