Fantastic Knives for the Beginner Chef that Commands Respect.
Got this as a gift for my father, since he’s been wanting a good beginner chef knife set, and let me tell you, he LOVES them. Talks about them all the time, and is fascinated with their use. Very sharp out of the box. Can I get into the technical about them? Not really, I’m not going to pretend to. Most chefs at a higher level prefer picking their knives out individually, if that’s you, then you’re probably not looking at this set anyway, however, if you or a loved one just wants a good set of knives to learn about cooking as an art form rather than as a task, or are just dabbling, this is a fantastic place to start. This brand has name recognition for good reason. Anyone in the know can tell you, this is not a brand to scoff at. Very respectable, specially if you’re starting out, this is a good gateway. Nothing but love for Victorinox. These knives should be washed and sharpened immediately after each use, to not allow them to dull, so my next purchase (should couple yours if you can) is an electric knife sharpener (good ones can be found for about $30). Been well over a week of use and he’s still pumped about them, which makes me happy. BEWARE, I would use hand protection with these, this is most definitely not a set of knives for people who have no clue what they’re doing, you can, and will, cut yourself with these. The quality of the little kit that holds the knives is fine, not entirely out of place. Besides the little plastic covers for the knives, there is no real protection from he blades. My dad just puts them back in the little plastic and it works well for him. Some people prefer covers for theirs, I wouldn’t know what direction to point you to if that’s the case, but just a heads up.I got them at $154 which is a good price, probably on the upper-end of what I’d pay for them though. I’m sure I could’ve gotten them for lower if I waited long enough, but my dad wanted the gift now and this was the best set in my opinion for that price point. I would try to pay around that or a little less if possible for a set of these, but I don’t expect to find this quality, realistically, for under $100. If they’re being offered for more than what I got them for (as they currently are), I would hold off on the purchase until they restock at a lower price. Overall though, 5 Stars!

Great knife set
This is a great set of kitchen knives at the price. Forschner Fibrox knives have been top-rated by a lot of different groups, including Cook's Illustrated; I liked them even before I knew that, just because of the "Victorinox" stamp on the blades, just like my childhood Swiss Army Knives. These knives handle beautifully and cut amazingly well; I've bought five or six of the "paring' knife in this set over the years (my dog likes to chew the handles up, for some reason). When I wanted to upgrade to a full set of kitchen knives and get a honing steel, I got this set, and it was a perfect purchase: the boning knife made dismembering my first whole chicken an almost comically easy process (although the directions in the Joy of Cooking helped too). The knives are light and somewhat flexible, and they're made with stamped rather than forged steel, but they still function excellently despite that -- they give forged function at stamped price.Drawbacks:Some people may find the largest knife in this set, the 10" Chef's knife, a little big and a little lightweight for the size -- a slightly heavier, slightly shorter knife might be a little bit more easy to use.The set also comes with a portable "knife bag" which is probably useless unless you're part of a traveling chef's road show, but if you're using a magnetic knife strip or buying a non-traditional knife block (like the Kapoosh brand knifeblocks, though the 10" chef knife might not fit into those), and don't want the wooden knife block most other knife sets come with, this set gives a great selection of excellent-quality basic kitchen knives at what I found to be an unbeatable price. A perfect choice for a first knife set if you don't want a wooden knife block for whatever reason.EDIT: After having used these knives for about a year, I have to say that everything above is still valid, but they do dull a little quickly -- you might want to grab an electric knife sharpener to keep them well-honed. Alternatively, if you want to teach yourself how to hand-sharpen knives, these would probably be a good set to practice on.

Some of the best knives in the industry.
I purchased these knives as an upgrade to my knife kit I used in culinary school, and I am really surprised by how well they perform for the price. I've used my head chef's 800 dollar Japanese damascus steel chef knife and honestly it wasn't the same but it was really, really, close. Hard to believe the victorinox chef knife cost so much less. My only gripe is with the paring knife and the roll, the paring knife is just too long to be practical and the handle just feels a bit cheap. As for the roll the material isn't the greatest and gets cut easily when used frequently, what also surprised me was that it has the victorinox insignia embroidered on the outside which I really like but for some reason wasn't shown in the picture. But back to the knives, they also hold an edge incredibly well when properly maintained (please don't put them in the dishwasher). The handles are also absolutely stunning, they are very comfortable to use and your hand doesn't experience the fatigue you'd experience with other knives. The material that the handles are made of make it so that no matter how much water or oil you get on your hands they maintain their grip, which is just awesome.Overall if you're thinking about upgrading your knife kit, or are interested in getting a new set for your kitchen then go ahead and pick up these while the price is so low it's definitely worth it. When bought individually this set is worth close to $300.
