Solid!
I needed a meter for some of the cameras that I've recently acquired. I generally do natural light photography so didn't need a flash meter. This is just the ticket. Simple to use, solid build and comes with all of the accessories that I need. Lovely little device!

Simple to use and accurate
Bought this as a replacement for a digital light meter. The old one had been fine but once or twice the batteries had failed in the cold. No batteries to worry about with this one and the accuracy is just as good. I use it for stills and film and it is well up to the job for both

Pure analogue which is designed for a lifetime of use.
This light meter is perhaps the traditionalist’s choice when it comes to separate handheld light meters, as there are plenty of other, more modern (battery-operated) and slightly wider-scope meters which also allow flash-metering, on the market. However, if you don’t need flash metering and have a basic understanding of the relationship between the two basic components of exposure, namely ‘Apertures’ and ‘Shutter Speeds’, then the Sekonic L-398A Light Meter is probably all you will ever need.We probably take it for granted, but all photography - whether film-based or digital - depends on light, and so a means of accurately measuring its intensity or brightness (and thereby controlling its exposure) is crucial to successful photography. For more 'serious photographers' this is where a separate, handheld light meter can come in, especially perhaps if you still like (at least at times), shooting film. The Sekonic L-398a light meter has been around now for decades and it’s essentially a handheld light meter that generates its own power through its use of a photoelectric cell and therefore needs no battery; and it gives light meter readings at the press of a button. After simply setting your required ISO or film speed on its dial, and pressing the central button, the light meter’s needle will swing across the scale and point to a numerical value which simply has to be transferred to the front facing dial using the black pointer, and this then allows the meter to display all the useable Aperture and Shutter Speed combinations that will produce an accurate exposure. At first glance, the Sekonic L-398a light meter can look a bit overwhelmingly complicated because of all of its displayed figures and numbers, but it's simple and easy to use once you know how! However, the user instructions in the product's Instruction Manual in my opinion, are badly written and poorly explained - but there are several useful and informative 'how to use' videos that can be viewed on You Tube about this light meter which more clearly and helpfully show you how to use it.The Sekonic L-398a also allows cinematographers to select their cine frame rates based on the illumination, but for ordinary (that is, stills) photographers, the cine frame rate scale on the dial can be completely ignored. The Sekonic L-398a Studio Deluxe iii comes boxed with a leatherette case, a strap and comes supplied with its Lumisphere attached - with which it will most likely be used most of the time for taking ambient (incident) light meter readings. It also comes supplied with two other (interchangeable) discs - which are likely to be just kept in the box and never used by most photographers - one of them though allows the meter to take reflected light meter readings (in exactly the same way that built-in camera meters do), and the other one which is designed especially for incident light readings when photographing flat artwork etc. The unit also comes supplied with a 'High Slide' which needs to be slotted into the top of the light meter when you're shooting in very bright conditions, but which ordinarily sits in its own slot at the rear of the light meter.Overall this is a quality product in my opinion, and one which should give a lifetime of service.
