Does this have to be covered in a protective box? Worried as there are exposed wires..

No protective box, that’s a feature, you have to enclose them. There is a little flap over ther terminals and if you sleeve the wires it would help, but ideally box them in.

does it need an earth fitted?

Short answer, yes. Long answer, you only get the module, not a power cable. You therefore need to make your own power cable to connect to the earth, live and neutral and fit an appropriate plug. You then need to make a cable to connect the positive and negative outputs. If you don’t know what you are doing, research the process or buy a different power supply as getting this wrong can cause serious harm.
