Works great
This works better than my "32 mile" midlands, the midlands actually go 2.8 miles over cornfields with a couple of trees. I was able to get a clear signal a half mile further, and thats without playing with anything and I was in my truck with the antenna out the window... so some interference.I have used FRS/GMRS stations so far. Now that the radio works Ill schedule the HAM technicians license test. I can almost reach my kids at school 5 miles away with this. I think if I picked up a 40 watt base unit with an antenna on the house my kids could contact me on our GMRS freq/channel. But Ill likely get the ham radio license to since ive already studied and I can use more of this little radios abilities.I will likely get a taller antenna. The basic factors that effect signal are going to be obstructions, distance, radio power, height, size and quality of antenna. Im impressed. its already outperformed more expensive radios out of the box.

Best value in HAM radio!
Probably the best value in HAM. I also have a couple of the 5w UV5R's. This is a few extra watts and a better overall package. It often reaches out further than my ICOM HT. Slap a good antenna on it and you are good to go. I also got the larger battery. I've also purchased a few of these to give away as gifts.

Great radio but had a charger issue
I was looking for something that would upgrade / replace my UV-5Rs. Good strong radio for that, I can hit and talk on a repeater 14.7 mi away, from inside my house, which has a tremendous amount of interference in and of itself. Easy to program just like the UV-5R. The FCC has rendered these useless as transmitters on the FRS/GMRS frequencies. You can listen to those frequencies but from the factory you cannot transmit. I've read somewhere there is possibly an unlock process, but that is up to you to figure out. The only issue I have besides the charger base not working properly, is the antenna. Is the antenna better at transmitting and receiving than the old rubber ducky? Yes. Is it more durable, no.The antenna will take a set bend, but it can be straightened back out fairly easily at the base. This is a little disconcerting if you have CDO which is the true way that OCD should be pronounced if you really want to talk about it! LOLI have another radio arriving today as a replacement for the base. I don't really understand that but that's what they want to do. I will report back with functionality for that radio as well. Very easy to program with chirp and actually stronger on the transmit then my UV-82HP. I plan on buying several more of these.

Gift for a friend!
While I did not open the radio package, I am sure my friend will enjoy using this radio daily.

Paid for 8 watts, only got 5.
GT-3tp mark iii. I bought this model because it was advertised as 8 watts. My power meter shows it only outputs 5 watts on high power. The antenna was bent to fit in the box and the sma antenna base was bent at the bottom, I assume this happened when it was built. So the antenna sits on the radio crooked and can’t be completely screwed in because of this. Car cigarette lighter power supply was incorrectly labeled as a 12 volt supply, but put out the 10 volts needed. The radio appears to be working. Not worth my time to send it back.

It works
This is my third one --- the first one developed a funny volume switch that would often play at full volume only. You could r&r the battery, reboot, and it would work normally for a while. Sometimes when you transmit the battery contacts get very warm against your hand. The older two radios would let you transmit on GMRS (I have that license too) and FRS as well as EM frequencies. I volunteer with my county's Marshall's office and EMS so this came in handy; they appreciate not having to loan me one of their radios. This new one won't transmit on any of those. On this most recent order I had to return the first one. When I tried to program it with RT software the screen went blank. I fiddled with it for a while, reboot, restart the software, and I was finally able to load the program. But it left me with a bad feeling so I exchanged it. The replacement works perfectly except for not transmitting on all the extended frequencies.
