Yes, the joey would fit in an altoids tin, but not the other figures.

Q: What are their tails made out of? Are they well attached or at risk of being pulled off?

The material for the tail is similar to a pipe cleaner. They are attached very well and though my 3 year old plays with the Kangaroos a lot, the tails have never been pulled off.

Q: Do the tails prevent them from sitting in chairs or laying down?

They can still sit down and lay down fine. The tails are made out of a pipecleaner type material, so they have a bend to them.
