Great USB serial adapter, works great with Android (Oreo)
Got this mainly for pulling data from a serial device into an app running on an Android device (specifically a Note8 running Oreo with given OTG adapter). In the end, I have the OTG adapter (USBC->USB), then this (USB->Serial), to the device. Not super clean, but works well enough for the times I have to use it.Pros:Plug and play with Android (largest plus by far). No special app/drivers needed. Is able to keep up with fast baud rates on just device power (19.2K for my needs).Cons:The male connector version should have nuts, not screws. (They're removable & standard size, so I fixed it with spares.).Is NOT plug/play with Win10. Comes with drivers, but Win10 does not auto-install.Overall, I'm sure I could get this to work with Win10 if I really wanted it. Normally I'd ding it for not being plug & play with Win10, but since I bought this explicitly for use with Android, and that worked, it's re-gaining that star.

Exactly what I needed
This is exactly what I need to connect an old GPS unit to my new laptop. It gave it 4 stars because it sits a little loose in the USB spot, but that's not really a big deal. It's super easy to use without 6 feet of extra cabling that I don't need.

Newer laptops do not come with a serial port (a CCOM port)... this is the fix for that...
Take it from an engineer. This just plain works.Technical note: There are two classes of USB to serial chips that are used in these adapters. There are the FTDI ones and there are the Prolific ones. The devices that use the FTDI chipare more expensive but they ALWAYS work. The devices that use the Prolific chip arecheaper and they mostly work but not always. Sometimes you can find a driver, but notalways.Summary: This device is FTDI based (it works!), doesn't have a cable that can be damaged,is small, is durable, fits in a laptop bag, and if I didn't mention it before, it works!

Simple as it comes
Having used quite a few of these converters, this one is simple and always seems to do the job. Other identical items I always had issues with working with some equipment and not with others. This one is the pinnacle of simplicity and yet has to fail me on any application

Ftdi usb to rs232
Came quickly. Brand new & durability not known. Driver Install yet to be completed. I like the size. It is light weight & not bulky so is good for mobility. It is touted as being plug & play on windows 10. However, it is not for me on any of my 3 windows 10 computers. After plug in the computer has a mind of its own & the mouse pointer moves around on its own. Attempts to reposition pointer result in opening screen boxes. It comes with a driver on included disk. It can be loaded prior to the device install. I am paranoid & I don't like to load unverified 3rd party software but it appears that might be necessary for it to operate properly.
