Fantastic Illustrations!
I spotted this book on the shelf of a bookstore in Greenwich, England largely due to the illustrations rather than just the content. I bought it for my then two-year-old son while we were living in London. Of course I suspected what others have confirmed in their reviews, namely that it initially taught him about some dirty habits rather than moving him away from them. But that was short-term and with repeated reading he soon learned not to______, or ______, or eat _____ and ______.Still, we both did find it hilarious and over a year later, he's still enjoying this one. And in the long run he doesn't "wee in the flower bed", or "pick boogies from his nose", and he never eats them, so I think one can still argue that the book works. As others have written, he does love repeating "No, Bertie that's dirty Bertie!".This year on a return trip, I managed to find another book illustrated by David Roberts at the Tate Modern Museum Shop - Cinderella (an Art Deco rendition) and it's also a great story with a modern twist.I hope more of his books will be sold here in the US.

very funny and not offensive
Some of the comments reminded me of when I was doing children's theatre and in one town the parents made us change a line in our play (which was actually taken from a mexican folk tale) from cow patty tamales to mud tamales -- as they felt saying cow patty was offensive. If that kinda thing would offend you then I suppose this book would as well. For the rest of the us, enjoy.

Humorous approach to hygiene, aimed at pre-schoolers and young primary
Bertie has some dreadful habits that horrify his family, who all scream out "No Bertie! That's dirty Bertie!" every time he's caught out. But Bertie also learns for himself (as we see from the pictures) why these habits are considered "dirty".My daughter discovered this book at pre-school and when I offered to buy her a special story to commemorate finishing pre-school, she asked for this one. The whole family thinks that Dirty Bertie is hilarious and "No Bertie! That's dirty, Bertie!" has become a household catchphrase. If you're happy to giggle at a picture of a bottom or if you think it's time to discuss WHY nose-picking is dirty, this is the book for you. Some negative reviewers of this book have said it teaches bad habits, but I actually found that my kids were interested in talking about why Bertie's habits were so dirty, and why we don't do things like that. Don't mean to brag but I'm happy to report that none of my children have been licking the dog's face or weeing in the garden since reading this book. If your child is indulging in anti-social "dirty" habits, this is a great way to tackle the problem with good humour and helpful illustrations.

HIlarious!
A hilarious story book for both adult and children. In Dinosaur, the reader would be amazed by the size of the papier mache dinosaur made by Mr. Monk and could only sympathise with him when Bertie and his friends destroyed his efforts when they slunk into his house to capture it. The last part when Angela said, "Sorry, but I am a bit busy right now..." when Bertie and his friends sought her help to get out of the hole dug by themselves was rather funny. In Chocolate, the readers could only laughed and felt contented that Bertie ate half of the prized giant Easter Egg chocolate that was finally won by Nicholas and the drawing of Nicholas expression would gave the reader the feeling of "Serve him right". In Pet Sitter, Bertie had to look after Angela's cat while they were away. It triggered the funny bone when the reader read Bertie belting the constable with Angela's book and the biggest catch was the drawing of Bertie as a ballerina.
