It's a light bulb. It lights up.
I bought this because I thought the old one was probably not long for this world, being two or three decades old. The old one started flickering within a couple of weeks of the new one arriving. So a fortuitous purchase, but a bit creepy. The new bulb is the same make and model as the one it replaces, so I look forward to another twenty years or more of desk illumination.
