I like ancient history, so naturally the title of this book caught my interest. The book is an easy read. I hadn’t realized that it had not been named “The Silk Road” until 1877. Nor had I thought much about how many empires were involved over time.The Silk Road was not one single road. The development of the trade routes is covered, and how that increased cash flow, and in turn led to scientific advancements. It spread religion, culture, and knowledge, in addition to physical goods. It led to mutually beneficial agreements between countries, and even contributed to a victory in war.The silk, spices, and certain gemstones were very popular. There is archaeological evidence that silk worms may have been bred for silk at 4000 BCE. Silk was even used as payment. The exotic spices from Asia included cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. One of the exotic gems was jade. Many more items were traded from China, such as paper, and of course there were items China desired from the areas to the west. This book tells about them, legends built up around them, and what we know from archaeological evidence.The author describes what traveling on the Silk Road would have been like. Soldiers traveled on the road. Slaves often traveled this road; they were an important trade good. The book gives examples of the spread of art and architecture along the route. It covers the spread of religion, astronomy, and mathematics on the Silk Road.The Silk Road made major historical contributions, which this book explains. I enjoyed learning about it. Reference book regarding the trade route to the items needed to trade over the centuries including China. The Author did an excellent job bring this period to life!

Great writing to put you in the place not just facts. A fatter version which includes the plague is the one to get if you are not queasy.
