yes it happened to me as well, there is a hose to connect on the bottom, once you do that it will not leak

Q: Can this be used with smoke outside?

Yes, it can be run with smoke outside. That is part of why I had to buy an air conditioner, due to poor air quality which keeps me from opening my windows at night. The area I lived in had a bad forest fire about 10 miles from where I live 2 years ago. There is a ventilation duct by my water heater. The air gets drawn through that to the a/c since the a/c exhausts air to the outside. I had a very light smoke smell in my apartment, so I bought an air filtration device that I plug in near where the air gets drawn in through the ventilation for the water heater. That seemed to help, but at worst it was a very faint smoke smell, and the air filter eliminated the particulate matter.
