Nirmata Quest
Months after 65, the year 2023 brought us another stand alone movie with an original concept, that isn't part of a series or franchise an adaptation or a sequel to anything. Would that this was the start of a trend.Gareth Edwards gets back in the director's chair for the first time since Rogue One. With a tale of artificial intelligence. It is one of those movies that has to fill in a lot of details quickly at start, but suffice to say nations in the west have banned AI ever since a nuclear attack on the USA. But AI is allowed in Asia. An area which has developed in interesting ways as a result. The US has an all powerful weapon but Asia has developed one to combat it. Joshua [John David Washington] is a military man with a past trauma, sent in to get it. The weapon is not what anyone expected.....This does take a few mins to settle down, because after the opening exposition you then get dropped into the middle of a scene where I took a minute or two to entirely figure out some things. But after that it gets really good. Most of this does seem to have been done with practical effects. There are some shots that might have been cgi because of their nature, but it didn't look apparent. It does offer some moral dilemmas to give you things to ponder. As an action movie it works, feeling very realistic. The Asian setting offers great landscapes. It did become a narrative where I really wanted to know what was going to happen next, and it held me as a result.I also rather liked Alison Janney as a military commander. In a role that feels like it could have been written for Frances McDormand, she really makes it her own.The plot does come together pretty well beyond the halfway point. It does then leave you thinking how is this going to end? It kept me on tenterhooks for that. When it does then head into the final straight, it does end up feeling slightly stretched. But that's only a minor complaint. It's an ending that works, and does hit home well.Good solid science fiction of the kind I like to see. Well worth a look. The dvd goes straight into the main menu with no trailers or ads.The language and subtitle options are:Languages: English, Castilian Spanish, English audio described.Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish. There are no extras at all.

good but rather odd
interesting concept and story line but a little confusing I liked watching it but like most films of this genre was left wondering because of the complexity.

Outstanding performances, perhaps the best acting from such a young child I've seen.
It's got a well-structured plot, depth in story line and characters, brilliant effects, outstanding performances across the board but what talent and craft from young Madeline! For a 7 year old to have such insight into emotional complexity was one of the most remarkable roles I've seen for a long, long time.

Overdone plotlines ruin fantastic ideas
Well though out future world but too formulaic. Love the visualization of a possible future and the acting by the two main characters. Unfortunately the story follows such an overdone plot! Could have done so much more with it. Worth watching but overall disappointing

"..BRILLIANT, ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI IN YEARS.."
PLOT...Against the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child. The creator is a wonderful sci-fi movie that looks visually amazing and tells a nice story, this is certainly one of the best sci-fi movies of this kind since District 9. An amazing looking world has been created here, good characters, a mix of human and AI cast, amazing special effects that look flawless and stunning, especially in 4K, the movie has a great soundtrack too, its been a while since something like this has come along, well worth checking out if your into the sci-fi genre! Very entertaining, plenty of big action set pieces and cool looking tech and weapons, the story has some heart and emotion too.Blu-ray and 4K look amazing.Special features is just one long making of (56mins) Extra only on Blu-ray disc.Region FREE ABC. Running time 133mins. 2023.English language movie, English subtitles.First print Comes with a nice shiny slipcase.

I love this film. ... I love it.
In some ways it's better after a second watch. In the first viewing, I found the story fairly easy to follow, but it did have numerable twists and turns. On top of that, there was eyewatering special effects to take in; the CGI is spectacular. The sci-fi is first rate. There's also some good action sequences. The characters and acting are brilliant, and you root for the good guys.On second watching I found myself less dazzled by the special effects. I kind of new the plot and places. However there were for sure moments when paid attention to the sci-fi, and was stunned. ... I also watched with subtitles on to make sure I caught every word of dialogue. I felt like I understood the mechanics of who was who strongly, and was emotionally washed out by the end of the film.To conclude:The story, hit quite hard on first viewing, but hit much harder on second viewing. (Love the plot and ethics.)The sci-fi hit so hard on first viewing, and it vied for your attention over the plot slightly. Sci-fi still outright gorgeous - on second viewing. If you watch this film twice, it might emotionally stun you.

Really good, top quality sci fi.
Amazing, I love it. Really good sci fi, complex, challenging, beautiful and heart-breaking. I feel as if I can detect Influences of anime and The Expanse. Somehow Gareth Edwards manages to choose leads who are slightly below the apex of charisma, but it must be intentional so perhaps that's something to reserve judgement on because the whole package is fantastic.
