Q: Does it work for short haired dogs?

It works for our two dogs, one is long-haired (husky/Shetland sheepdog mix), one is short-haired (full husky) and LOTS of hair from both, so it should.

Q: Has anyone compared this to the ChomChom roller? If yes, does this perform better or worse?

1000 times better. I have both and only use the Black & Decker one now.

Q: Is this good for carpeted stairs?

Yes, it will definitely work on any carpet. It would of course take more time and more effort than a vacuum, but it really picks up the dog hair in my house. It is 7 1/2 inches wide, so it covers a large area. My white pomeranian sheds long hair, and it cleans it up very well.
