Very effective DWA-171 AC600 Dual Band WiFi adapter
The product I have just received was marked as Model DWA-171 and also shown as an AC600 Mu-Mimo dual band USB adapter. This is slightly different to the older model listed in that it has a WPS button on its side face not on the end face of the unit. However, I have never had luck installing Wifi keys using the WPS button on any device. I have both DWA-171 models, so the major difference with the AC600 model lies in the installation of the software which took me some time to understand the process When first plugged in, the unit was recognized immediately by my laptop but showed up in Device Manager as a Portable Device not Network Adapter. So when I found it in Windows Explorer it had been allocated a new drive letter. When clicking on the drive letter, I could then see the software Exe file. Clicking on this started the software installation, then all was fine. So the software installation was completely different to the other DWA-171 model and I’m sure this method of software installation will be missed by many customers creating problems with people wrongly believing the unit was faulty. The unit works fine and is a better solution for connecting to the internet over WiFi when using my new HP laptop that came with only a single band Wifi card. I am pleased with the way the unit functions over both wave bands. When in the same room as my router the connection over the 5GHz band works brilliantly fast but when several rooms away from my router then the 2.4GHz band is stronger. So it is great to now have two wave band options using such a small but very effective device.Update:I have several good mini-laptops with XP installed which I upgraded to Windows 7. I tried the adapter but it would not work until Microsoft updated the software to Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Then the adapter was alive! So now I have several ultraportable laptops which have superb internet connections using the adapter.

Good quality buy
I have used quite a few D Link products in the past and all have been good quality so when i saw this I thought I got to give it a try. I wasn't disappointed as it performs great. Of course people are going to get different results depending on there connection but I like it and its very compact.

Works for me
For some reason my ASUS barebone M3A-3200 wouldn't recognise the Netgear wireless dongle which we had been using for a while in another machine (ACER 5100). Having a D-Link DIR-855 router I chose to go with the same manufacturer to try and sort it out. It worked, the signal quality is good enough for it be used in a bedroom, where the signal is passing through a floor and a wall. I can only give this product 5 stars as it does exactly what I wanted it to do and it does it well, is unobtrusive and is relatively inexpensive. Upload and download speeds are better than expected for a small dongle

Might be okay if you're running Windows XP or Vista.
I bought this to attach to a Synology diskstation, so I could put my backup storage in another room. The DWA-131 is listed as a compatible wireless dongle. However, it's the hardware version A1 of the D-Link DWA-131 that is specifically listed. Nowhere on the Amazon page does it say that the one I bought would be H/W version E1. Which is incompatible. So I thought I'd try it on a Windows 10 computer. Mistake. The supplied installation disk doesn't have Windows 10 drivers and, moreover, the setup file on the installation disk will not even run under Windows 10: Windows 10 just refuses to run it, even when 'run as administrator'. The D-Link website is no use either, as they don't seem to have realised that Microsoft have released Windows 10 and there is no mention of it, nor any drivers or information at all.I then thought I'd try it in a very old Windows XP pc. Unfortunately, the cd drive in that pc stopped working about 5 years ago, and I'd never replaced it as I don't use that pc at all. No problem, I'll just download the drivers from the D-Link website. But the driver download section on the D-Link website doesn't know about hardware version E1, so there isn't the option to download drivers for the one I've bought. At this point, after about 3 hours, I lost the will to live, and chucked it in the bin.Poor show from D-Link for not keeping up with windows releases. Poor show from Amazon for not making it clearer what version of the DWA-131 they're selling.
