v. good but needs a VITAL change/ improvement
this book is a game changer for anyone suffering with anxiety and depression. but don't make some mistakes that i made 1. you can't just read the first bit and then tell yourself you feel good so you can come back to it, this was fatal as i soon spiralled into feeling super low again and then wondered why. you need to commit to the exercises 2. this is why i've knocked off a star, i was feeling very depressed and anxious so i started doing the exercises again, chapter 8 focuses on identifying your 'hot thought' before going to the next chapter that then teaches you how to create a more balanced thought. my issue with this is: if your doing chapter 8, like i was. you are identifying your negative thoughts and then evaluating how bad they make you feel. if your doing 1 chapter at a time (like it recommends) and are feeling low, you are stuck on ruminating on your looping bad thoughts which is the root of the whole problem. so if you make this mistake you will end up making yourself feel 10x times worst. for me, this sent me into a spiral - so when doing the book, please make sure you do the two chapters together so you aren't just stuck on the rumination of negative thoughts. do the balanced thought exercises straight after to avoid feeling worst.other than that i am pleased to have found cbt and makes a lot more sense that it backed up by science.

An effective self-help programme with a well tested scientific basis.
I already had a copy of the first edition which I had dabbled in, but this time round I have been able to identify anxiety as the problem I most need to address, so my use of the book is much more focused. The extra chapter on anxiety in this new edition is really helpful, in addition to the modifications made to some of the existing chapters. If there is one area in which the book could have been improved with regard to my personal needs, it would be to address generalised anxiety disorder a bit more. I have a general sense of unease which is difficult to pin down, and which is different from the more focused fears that people with other anxiety disorders tend to get. However I am, bit by bit, finding ways to connect my own experience to the exercises and examples given in the book, and I have already made significant progress even in the short time that I have been using it.If you plan to travel a lot and you want to keep using the book every day, I would recommend thinking about getting the Kindle version to use on your laptop or tablet (if your tablet has a reasonably big screen). The paper edition is quite bulky.

Excellent, totally worth the money! 😁
I've had this book for under 24 hours and already it's helping me. I was feeling totally like poo for the last week no energy, I just wanted to lock myself away, I've done CBT before but I wanted more I wanted something that I could work on slowly everyday to change my life, (so I'll review again in a few months) this book is way more effective than the course I did, it goes in to alot more detail about moods and anger and how our thoughts tend to be the reason we feel the way we do. A couple pages in, writing down the situation and thoughts and asking the questions you get guided to ask yourself made me feel so much better. My mood soon changed! And I felt motivated. The worksheets are great. It's kind of like a journel in to you're own mind. It is hard work trying to change the way you think and to over come mental health but it is totally worth it.
