Spoiler free! Great movie for all the family
Beautiful story of a rebellious, young Scottish teen, who wishes to rebel against her parents and their traditions (specifically her mum who is the one being strict about said 'traditions'). She thinks she finds a way to choose her own fate but ends up ruining life for her mother. The only way to fix things is to fix their relationship and this film tells the tale of how they built that bridge. It's heart-warming, entertaining and wonderfully brought to life through the stunning use of colour and detailed animation. It's a perfect family movie which I would recommend to all young and old.

Long ago in the Highlands
A new movie from Pixar. Moving away from sequels and adverts for Cars merchandise for now, they return once more to a wholly original story. Which is always when they are at their strongest.Long ago in Scotland, there lives a young princess called Merida. Being strong willed and free spirited and a brilliant Archer aren't quite the qualities usually required to be a dutiful princess and a good wife. But when the time comes for her to do her duty to her family and marry the son of a rival monarch, the prospect doesn't appeal to her.An attempt to change her fate leads to problems for her family, and the fate of her kingdom hangs in the balance. Can she deal with a deadly monster who almost once killed her father, and set things right?Brave features truly beautiful animation - Merida's long curly red hair being a particular stand out. It has superb scenery, brought to the screen with eye catching visuals. A great voice cast, most of whom are either Scottish or English. The role of the King fits Billy Connolly down to a tee and he's superb in the part. And it does have a storyline with a few interesting twists and turns along the way.It does also feature Merida's three younger brothers, who are rascally tearaways. They may appeal to young children but older individuals might find them annoying. There are also themes of destiny and life lessons that do feel just a little familiar. So it's not quite up there with the greatest pixar releases. But it's a fun and entertaining piece of film making that is lovely to look at and offers many delights, so it's definitely worth getting.Do be sure to watch to the very end of the final credits for an extra scene. The disc has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, French.Subtitles: English, French. The disc begins with lots of trailers and adverts. But you can skip these via the next button on the dvd remote. And most of these can be found in the sneak peeks section of the disc anyhow. The only extras are:A commentary from various members of the production staff.La Luna. The short - five minutes approx - cartoon that played before Brave on it's cinema release. This starts out a bit strangely and you can never be quite sure where it's going. But the ending is quite beautiful and makes the whole thing well worth watching.Plus the Legend of Mordu. Another five minute long feature, this one featuring a character from Brave telling you about the origin of the monster from it. Some of this may seem familiar from the film but the ending of this short is superb and also makes it worth a look. Don't watch it till after you've watched the movie though.

Cracking family movie
Reading some reviews, I did wonder about paying the hefty pre order price on this. However, I did and I don't regret it at all. We watched the film as a family and every single one of us enjoyed it from start to finish, a great colourful adventure with a good story and some highly amusing parts. My 3 year old daughter loved it so much she's watched it now for about 8 nights running before she goes to bed, so bottom line, money well spent.

Enchanting
I am not the target audience for this kind of film but I found it very pleasing. The voices were outstandingly good and the animation was extraordinary. It avoids all that cloying gooiness that often spoils animations. There is always a bit of sentimentality in films like this but nothing I couldn't handle. All the elements of the story set in some idealised medieval period came together in a way that suspended disbelief. The colours and textures are as vivid as anything I've ever seen in an animation and the animals have a sinuous living quality. The music was good and the story had some of the darkness of a real fairy tale. The central character Merida is a good strong heroine to counterbalance all that Barbie crap that little girls have to contend with. The little brothers didn't appeal so much because they were too cute.I bought it for my sister's 9 year old but I haven't heard how she liked it yet. The voice acting was superb and made this one of the best feature length animations I've seen.
