My Thoughts on XTOOL and the D1 Pro 20W
I purchased my XTOOL D1 Pro 20W on May 22, 2023. I'm retired and was looking for a hobby with income potential. At first I thought about getting a router CNC but the expense along with my research changed my mind and I am glad it did. I got the red version along with the extension kit and air assist. I even used it to help me build my enclosure.Hardware and Assembling the laser -Putting the laser together was fairly easy and straight forward. The directions were clear and the pictures helped. My only criticism (actually, just an observation) is that I received the standard Pro 20 before I received my accessories. So I put the standard version together then downloaded the firmware per the directions using the free XCS software XTOOL provides. Then when I received my extension kit, I had to completely dismantle my laser and then rebuild it using the extended wiring and rails. I really don't like doing things twice, so my suggestion is that if someone orders the laser with the extension kit, that the laser should come with the extension kit rather than the standard kit and the extension kit later. To me, that just makes sense. Regardless, other than the additional time it took me to add the extension kit, It went together just like the directions said. After I got the Laser put together with the extension kit, I added the air assist. I would strongly urge anyone buying a laser to also purchase an air assist. It really helps to keep the charring down to a minimum. I also bought XTOOL's dual honeycomb panels. These are a must if you do a lot cutting as they protect the surface of what your laser is sitting on as well as the backside of what your cutting. The RA2 comes with the pro version and to be honest, I have only used it once to engrave a logo on a 20oz. tumbler. After trying to make a circle for my logo, I watched a YouTube video and figured it out. My tumbler came out great. You just have to remember that YouTube is your friend. I've learned a lot from watching it. XTOOL also provides the free software, XCS (XTOOL Creative Spaces).Laser Enclosure -For the first month, I played with the laser, engraving everything I could think of just to see how it would come out. At first, I was disappointed because very few things came out the way I thought they should. YouTube introduced me to SETTINGS. Now I run material settings on just about everything before I do any laser engravings. It doesn't take long to dial in to the correct settings. It just takes practice and patience. I began to engrave on black slate, white tile, wood, canvas and anything else I could think of. I created a little shop in my garage and it didn't take long before I realized I had to do something about the fumes I was causing with my engraving. So after watching a couple of YouTube videos, I created a custom enclosure for my laser with dual 4" exhaust fans, one above and one below the honeycomb panels to take care of the fumes and smell. I also added transparent orange acrylic panels so I could watch the job run without wearing glasses or worrying about my eyes being damaged. Shortly after, I finished my enclosure, XTOOL began to market their own. I wish they had done it sooner as I probably would have just bought theirs and bypassed all of the problems I ran into while trying to put mine together. Regardless, whether you purchase one or build your own, I highly recommend you get one. Breathing in the fumes from engravings are not one bit healthy.Software -XTOOL provides XTOOL's Creative Spaces laser software for free. This software will provide you with everything you need when you first get started. XTOOL also provides weekly updates for their software. Their software is becoming more sophisticated over time as a result of their commitment to making their software more robust as well as being user-friendly. Lightburn is another laser software product and is more capable than XCS in many ways. However, you have to pay for it and unless you are really doing a lot of really sophisticated things, XCS should suit you just fine. To be honest, I also have Lightburn because some things I can do with Lightburn but can't with XCS. Also in XCS's favor is that you can work remotely as it works over WI-FI while Lightburn only works via USB plugin. The main reason I use both products is because it is always nice to have a Plan B.Customer Support -As with any product, there comes a time when you will need customer support. This has happened to me twice since May (7 months). One issue had to do with a stripped set screw on the Z-axis that holds the laser module. The second is was a laser module failure. I hate calling customer support about anything because customer support is either lousy or there are language issues. Needless to say, it was with a little trepidation that I contacted XTOOL's customer support. I am so happy I did. They are the most professional customer support people I have ever had the pleasure of talking to. Not only did they take the time to fully understand my issues, (it took a couple of emails and pictures), but within a week of each issue they sent me a brand new replacement part for each problem free of charge. I don't run into that type of customer support very often. So when I do, I want them to know I really appreciate their commitment to their customers.Summary -There are many, many more good things I could say about XTOOL's products and their Customer Service but lets just say they completely deserve my 5 Star rating!

Simple, easy-to-assemble design. Works great! Knocked off one star for software.
I bought this item for a very specific purpose; cutting flatwork for guitar pickups from vulcanized fiber board. It is very effective for this application, I’m totally satisfied with the speed and precision when cutting from vector files. Assembly took maybe 45 minutes from unboxing to hooking it to a laptop. Instructions are clear pictorial illustrations, which I guess helps keep translation to a minimum when exporting to many countries. There is a little vagueness regarding connecting and setting up the software, you have to search out the online instructions. I should qualify my remarks regarding ease of assembly in that I have a lot of experience with kits and home-brew motion control, so a total newbie might find it less straightforward, but it’s by far the best designed, highest value machine I’ve had.I’m a member of a Facebook group dedicated to this exact model, and the folks there are exceptionally helpful, so I think almost anyone should be able to get it working satisfactorily if they get stuck. It comes without air-assist, which most people end up adding. It helps keep the optical parts clean and also clears smoke away from the nozzle for cleaner cuts. Proper ventilation is a must.I’m only a few days in with using it; I’ve cut the fiber sheet mentioned above, thin wood (approx 1/8” thick) and experimented with plywood up to 1/2” thick. It does great on the thin woods… thicker is tricky; I got the best result by keeping the power fairly low and going fast with several passes. Using maximum power at a slow speed caused the material to ignite. Not good! Also have experimented with engraving graphics in insulated stainless steel tumblers using the rotary attachment. (powder coated black is all I’ve tried) still figuring it out but results are encouraging so far.The xtool XCS software (free download) is sufficient to get started but any serious user will probably find it limited. The XCS is pretty basic, and I’ve had issues with locating engraved images where I want them on the rotary fixture. I will be “upgrading” to a more capable package like Lightburn soon. Software aside, however, I am very pleased with this purchase, and can recommend it highly.
