Q: Hello - how do you know when to replace a box? e.g. do the white beads disolve, or do they just form a hard mass (the current state of mine)?

The white beads dissolve I normally change mine when dissolved completely or just a few beads left.

Q: Never used these before but due to the damp autumn..... do these overflow ? i.e. will i need to place it in bucket to catch any overflow water ?

No, when the tray is full of water a Red LED shows on the front and it turns itself off. Unplug it from the mains, remove the blue tray full of water and empty it out, slot it back in and when you plug it back in it starts its job again. I would actually highly recommend this unit, I put one in my bedroom thinking it probably wouldn't catch much, but the tray is full about every 2 weeks and I only plug it in a few hours a day, I was quite surprised.

Q: Could you use these in a fridge?

They are for condensation why put one in a fridge
