Anyone, young or old, seeking external hard drive, this one is a must!
5/11/2025 - LOVE it! I highly recommend "this" Western Digital hard drive. No noise. Easy to connect to old PC and then transfer to new PC. Storage capacity, 1 TB for me is plenty and knowing I have such storage, no worries. It is most compatible with both of my PC's. Small item, most reliable. Great value to me due to moving file/folders from my old PC to new PC!

Research is key before purchasing.
I bought this bc i have a couple laptops that have photos/ videos/ projects of mine that i wanted to unload off of there. Few reasons: laptops are older and i need to factory reset them, i want to sell these devices after they are all cleaned off, i also want all of my memories in one location. But i guess i didn’t do enough research on hard drives because i didn’t know that they were only comparable with certain programs, which is really really inconvenient. The laptops i have have older windows programs on them, which the hard drive is not cooperating with.I bought this and still have yet to use it. So I’m really salty(disappointed). It also has to be “reformatted” (whatever that means) to be compatible and operate with Apple devices. I wish i knew all of this before buying but i don’t want to return it- in case there’s actually a way i can use it and just don’t know how yet.So if anyone has any answers, tips, or suggestions on how to fix this issue, please comment or contact me. I’ll REALLY appreciate it.

Fantastic Customer Support
In my recent review of a Canon printer, I mentioned how easy it was to install. I also alluded to the fact that helpful product support is not always possible to get. I falsely assumed that the Passport would be relatively easy to set up, but remember I'm a senior citizen with very limited technical knowledge. So you might guess by now that I had to call customer support to get the Passport to work properly. The person that helped me was fantastic. He took over my computer and download all the setup files that were needed in order for the device to work properly. He was extremely patient and helpful and had things working properly in about 15 minutes. So, theoretically, it should have been easy to get the Passport installed and working properly. I can honestly say that I would not have been able to do that without the help of the rep. Thanks Western Digital for having such helpful reps.

It was not so fast when I got it. It needed work...
I was expecting this to be lighting fast as I have an identical unit that I like a lot. and is quite fast I split the thing into two partition each 1 Tb. I than formatted it to NTFS/exFAT/HPFS. now its pretty snappy. I am glad as I am tired of sending things back because the do not work.

Checking the Disk Drive, Sector by Sector
I had no trouble installing this disk drive. Also, it is quite fast at backing up my data.In reading other product reviews of external disk drives (not just WD), I have noticed a concern about the relatively high failure rate of disk drives in general -- though, according to product reviews and evaluations, Western Digital's drives seem to fare a little better than Seagate's. But to help with this problem, if you purchase a WD, you will notice that the disk comes with some third-party software that allows you to thoroughly check the health of the disk, sector by sector, whenever you like. It can take a few hours, but you can always let it run in the background. It is among the apps called "WD Drive Utilities." By running this app every now and then, you can lessen the possibility of a nasty surprise later.

Great quality, worked perfectly. Not SSD.
This portable HDD drive worked exactly as we needed it to. Great for backing up a computer or transferring files. I bought a new computer and needed to transfer all my photos and documents from the old to the new, and this served the purpose perfectly. It will also be used to keep another computer backed up. Happy with it stationary storage, but I will be getting an SSD for portable storage because it is more durable and can handle being dropped better than this HDD drive will be able to. An SSD is also three times the cost for the same size, so this old-school drive, though slower, was worth it. And it wasn't slow, per se. I didn't feel like I was waiting around forever for it to finish. Just slower than an SSD would be.
