Ok, so yeah, you can easily find something similar to this, that can do mostly everything that it does, as well as a whole lot more, for something like thirty bucks. Well, I already knew that before I ordered this laser measuring tool. And I also already knew that I would have to use the app to switch between the front-based mode for free measurement, and the tail-based mode for edge measurement, because one of the pictures said that was the case.Now, I think they should have made this so that you didn't have to use the app to switch between those two measuring modes, but they didn't. And since I already knew that before I ordered this, if I was upset about it then that would be my own fault, lol. But despite that, I still ordered it. And I can't say exactly why either. I think I'm starting to develop a compulsion to obtain as many of HOTO's products as I can. I don't know, they are just very attractive to me for some reason.I think HOTO might even be a part of that very popular Beijing company, Xiaomi, because that's the developer of the Mi Home app that is sometimes used with HOTO products. And speaking of the app, it's actually not half bad. But don't just take my word for it. Because at the time of this review, the Mi Home app on the Google Play Store had 50 million downloads and had an average rating of 4.2 stars from ONE MILLION reviews!Anyway, I wouldn't recommend gifting this to someone, or using it yourself, if it's going to be used as an everyday measuring tool on constructions sites or anything like that. No, this is more meant for use around the house every now and then. Well, that's my opinion at least.

I like that it works. I tested it multiple times with it against my regular 25' tape. At most, it was 1/16 off but that couldve been user error since pressing the button moves the laser a tiny bit. the problem is that you don't know if the laser is level if you aren't measuring off a flat spot. for example, if you measure a spiral duct, how do you know you're measuring straight down? if you're pointing the thing at an angle, ur measurement will be way off. so in the end, when I was measuring elevation, I didn't completely trust the fractional dimensions the tool gave. I would've bought it again though if it was the same price. mainly because the size of it, & because I'ma sheet metal worker and we don't need to be accurate to a 16th for duct 65' in the air. if the duct is 64' 11 3/4" high in that example, that's fine. if there was a bubble level on 2 sides of this device, it would be worth triple the price imo. as is, it should be like 30-40 bucks at most

Neat gizmo, but not suitable for me:If you don't download the Xiaomi Home app (in Play store: Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co. LTD), your options with this device are limited.For example, the unit arrives set to report distances in feet, inches and fractions of an inch. If you want to change that to meters or centimeters - you must do it via the app.The reported distance can be reported in reference to either the front edge; or the rear edge of the device - you change this via the app......but the app won't run unless you give it access to both your phone's network as well as internal data; and you MUST create a Xiaomi account; and be signed in.If this doesn't matter to you - IT SHOULD. We do not want the communists spying on us and harvesting our data.I use a hardened operating system on my mobile device (Graphene OS), which provides a lot of extra security features and options for dealing with apps that might be malware. While I was trying to finagle my settings to run the app safely, my operating system's malware watchdog popped in to alert me the app was trying to do nefarious things.Americans need to start making their own gizmos and software, and the Chi-Coms should be ashamed of themselves.
