No mountains, just a very good book
After despairing of ever finding a good book on C++, I bought this one based on the advice of a work colleague, and I'm glad I followed her advice!C++ How to Program is a well-written C++ textbook designed for use in college undergraduate computer science classes. It includes all the information you'd need regarding computers, programming languages, and C++. At the end of each chapter is a summary of the concepts covered, and a set of self-text exercises. This book is not only a good reference, it's a good instructional source. It's by far the best book on C or C++ that I've ever read (and that includes Kernighan and Ritchie). If you're looking for a book on C++, buy this one and *not* the popular one with the mountains on the cover.

A helpful textbook for C++ beginners!
This textbook is a good option for beginners of C++ programming language. I rent this book for my C++ course. Overall, it explains material in detailed. It also has some examples in which each chapter that I learnt a lot from. After each chapter, there is an review section which summarizes important notes that you should keep in mind. If you have time, let do the exercises because they are kinda helpful to practice what you learn.

Paperback at over $150 - are you kidding us?!
Well, for $150+ -- in easy excess one hundred and fifty US dollars, there's really no excuse for this NOT being a hardcover. Frankly, it's preposterous to peddle a paperback, thousand-page tome that serves in a great many places as the textbook and not be hardcover. Perhaps that's not the fault of the writer(s) but they've been in the business long enough to have the clout to have changed that.Editorially, it's on par with the previous editions, so that's a major saving grace, and it's got NEW stuff to at least make it a worthwhile purchase if you are torn between this and the earlier edition(s) -- things like C++14, smartpointers and so on (definitely worth $20 more). Deitel books, as this is, tend to be reasonably comprehensive, and as an intro (even to advanced level) to C++, object oriented programming and programming in general, this is as good as they come.Layout, typographics, presentation and readability are lovely -- still using the blue shading and blue-text for highlights. More colors would be nicer but perhaps a tad superfluous.I see that the MSRP is $173 or so, and that'd be a monstrous rip-off at that price. I guess it's perfect if the aim is to educate whilest also further indebting/bankrupting the students required to make this same purchase.

The Deitels have the proven formula
The Deitel HOW TO PROGRAM series have been the leader for decades, in the field of teaching students how to quickly and thoroughly learn a programming language. Their books are thoroughly reviewed, and are continuously and significantly improved and updated with new editions every 2 years or so, based on current trends, insights and feedback.

Received damaged new book
This book is the actual North America version. It is very expensive but necessary if you are going into the computer science field as you will refer back to this book in the future. However, the book came with warped/damaged pages. Keep in mind I paid for a BRAND NEW BOOK. I'm not going to return it because I need it for class, but storage for these books need to be re-evaluated.

worst programming book I have experienced
I am well into my college career (and have had many text books rented and purchased form Amazon), and this is the only one I just do not even bother to read any more. I get better instruction on the weekly material from various internet sites. I have no idea why the professor is using this text book. It is poorly organized and the entire thing is an example program snippet and then stepping you through said snippet.Additionally the publisher has withheld several chapters and Appendixes and you have to visit their website to access them, AND PAY TO ACCESS THE MATERIAL. Sure they include a single use access code on the front cover, but if like me you are renting the book or purchased a used copy that is useless. If you have another option for a Book over this one... Take It. Avoid this book if you can, and don't waste your money.
