FLAMES OF FREEDOM Grim & Perilous RPG: Powered by ZWEIHANDER RPG

A great reboot of an RPG that deserves a place on your shelf
At a back-breaking 627 pages, this tome reboots Colonial Gothic for a wider audience. There are very few RPGs that use Colonial America as its setting and, if treated properly, is rife with intrigue, action and pulp-action. I'm glad to see that Colonial Gothic is back and has the vigorous and intuitive d100 mechanic. I can't wait to get this to the table. The book comes with a two-sided, tear-out map of French Canada and the East Coast on one side and Boston and environs on the other. There is also a sewn-in bookmark which adds a touch of class. Go to drivethrurpg to download a fillable character sheet.

Solid setting and good version of the Zweihander system.
I like the skill based d100 system and zweihander was an improvement on Warhammer fantasy but this is yet another improvement on that. The talents and class progression feel more impactful than in the core zweihander game. The book is very well laid out and surprisingly well thought out with its setting, it’s historical and interesting where it should be while not being disrespectful and that’s impressive.

Beautiful but misleading
From a book design perspective this is a beautiful product. High quality paper, nice binding that allows the book to lay flat, interesting art. Only complaint there is this would be a much smaller book as pages are notably empty; huge margins, double spaced paragraphs, and large font. From the gate this is a broken product. This is pitched as a meticulously researched revolutionary war product (albeit with horror/fantasy elements) when truthfully it is not. They proudly bill on page xi that they reached out to consultants and "RPG safety and trauma experts" who clearly derailed the accuracy in favor pandering to people unlikely to purchase a Zweihander setting - a game notorious for dark, grim and brutal atmosphere (inspired as it wad by Warhammer Fantasy, and whose earliest supplement includes Main Gauche, a horror/chaos focus).Want a good fantasy setting loosely inspired by history? This will serve, esp if you are a fan of the Sleepy Hollow TV show, which this clearly derives some focus.Want a historically accurate book that takes actual history and period relevant myths/legends? Skip this.Black Puritans fighting in the war alongside comments about how women had equal rights (just never given credit) and some handwringing over not being insensitive firstly puts lie to any accuracy (most likely consultants referencing their own revisionist work) and secondly is not in sync with the mechanics/product line they utilized. Powered by the Apocalypse or D&D 5e or even Storyteller wpuld have been a better fit for this.Overall, I am disappointed in this product.not enough to return; I can use the framework and ignore the clear nonsense woven in and this is a beautiful product - but I am let down by the false advertising and will avoid these authors in the futurs.

Zweihander Meets American Colonial Horror
Flames of Freedom feels like a great improvement over its predecessors, Colonial Gothic and Zweihander RPG. Beyond the incredible mechanics, it bleeds with the supernatural. Great stories for every monster in the back and lots of maps. Super inclusive of Native American nations. The developers did their homework and found the best writers to make sure that the game oozes with horror without including racist stuff.

Exactly what it said it was
Arrived on time, and in great packaging, no issues, no damage.I'm just starting to delve into the content, but I'm pleased with the purchase and pricing. Hopefully they continue to flesh out the world and environment with additional modules.
