Durable. Age to buy depends on individual
We've had this kart for 2 years now. It is still running great. I got it for my then 9year old boy. Awesome Christmas surprise! He is 11 now and still enjoys it and uses it although at this point he wishes it were faster. No worries, however, little brother at 6 years old loves it and it is plenty fast for him. He is young and I have to remind him not to show off or get crazy with his driving. So far so good. This is where parent discretion is advised. We have lots of boys in the neighborhood, a neighbor (8yrs old) who had ridden the cart a few times before suddenly crashed straight into the curb at top speed. I was there watching and he wasnt "driving crazy" or anything.. he bent the front wheel bar (husband fixed) and the boy got some scratches. He hasn't wanted to ride it again-I'm ok with that. While not super fast, it is fast enough for trouble, low profile enough to drive under parked trucks and smash heads ( hasn't happened here but I saw the potential). Also the low profile and muted colored flag makes it hard to be seen by cars. Driver error can happen no matter what the age of the kid. If your kid is crash prone or a distracted type, or a stunt show-off, injuries are going to happen. If your kid is a high powered driver of all things motorized with some sense of self preservation- this kart is perfect for ages 5-9. After that your tween will want something faster.NOTE: The kart does not drive at all on grass and is uncomfortable over large cracks or uneven ledges in sidewalks. It does not climb inclined slopes either. Storage below freezing= dead battery. But we still love and recommend it. Fun on smooth paths and cul de sac play. Easy to drive. I'm 5'3" 125lbs and I can drive it- although it's slower with me on it.

Mom's favorite Santa gift!
My 8-year-old twin girls have had 4 great years with a Fisher Price Powerwheels Mustang which they still drive around regularly. We live in a cul-de-sac on a wide street with plenty of room for kiddie cars. Santa decided to up their game this year and brought this go-kart. Assembly was a snap for my husband... not sure about the other reviews re: the poor instructions, maybe they have improved them? Anyway, he had it together in about 10 minutes and charging. The kids were excited when they first saw it but I think a little intimidated after their first test drives when they figured out how FAST it is, LOL. Also, there is no reverse (which they are used to having in the Mustang) so the learning curve for turning it sharp enough NOT to run into the curb was critical and a little tough. The go-kart got its first big ding on day one from a kid running it right into the curb. Our friends' 9-year-old son who came over to check it out had the same problem. I showed them that they could stop it, put feet down, and back it up manually. But after some extra driving lessons they are now pros at turning it in the street with no stops. This go-kart is SO MUCH FUN! I am 5'8" 120 pounds and have enjoyed some runs on it myself... it gets going fast enough to elicit WOOHOOS of joy out of Mom. :) The neighbors, whose 7-year-old son is rockin' his Powerwheels Jeep, were inquiring so I think we may have another one on our street before too long, but we may also get a second one for our house... it is that fun. We have not actually managed to kill the battery yet, so not sure what the total life is.

So much fun so wear your helmet and stay strapped in.
PROS: Came with most assembly already completed. Most tems identified as needing to be assembled out of the box were already done. It took less than 15 minutes to attach the steering wheel, bolt the seat to the frame, adjust the brake handle position to fit the 7 year old's preference, and inspect the chain tension. The only tool required to do these things was the supllied allen wrench. I noticed each of the tires showed sign of having been on the ground already, with absolutely no indication of any wear, scratches or other to the rest of the kart. I believe this to have been due to a test at manufacturer prior to packaging which is reassuring. The battery was already at full charge as indicated by the on board lamps at the throttle lever. The recommended weight limit (as I recall) is 140 pounds. With my cold weather attire, i do weigh more than that and couldn't resist the urge to try it out prior to putting it away for the lucky boy who would receive it at Christmas. At such a short distance between me and the ground, 13 mph seemed so much more than I had anticipated! 0 to max speed could not have been more than 2 seconds. Turning radius is much less to the right but still there seems to be no threat of rollover on a flat level surface.CONS: No reverse. Add some padding of some sort to the seat if you are close to the weight limit. Flag should be replaced with a taller, more visible one. International orange is my first thought. The flag is easy enough to remedy as is the padding. The absence of a reverse is one of those things that will not detract from the fun and excitement that will be experienced.
