RSMeans Etimating Handbook is intended as a reference book, not an academic book that teaches how to make a cost estimate. However, RSMeans goes beyond that purpose and compiles an excellent book that serves as an academic book, and as a reference book.It is a MUST to every Cost Estimator, Contractor, Manager, or similar.

A handbook indeed! It has laid the groundowrk and is a great resource for my venture into cost estimating.

just got my book today, was delivered towards the begging of the time frame they set, havent really run through the book yet but so far im happy with the book

Means cost guides are not intended to teach estimating. Rather they are cost references for use of an experienced estimator. To state that they are useless is to misunderstand their purpose. Its like reviewing a dictionary and faulting it for lack of plot. I've used these guides for over 40 years. It should be noted that even though they contain regional price adjustments, the estimator still needs to bring judgement to the estimate to factor for local and timing conditions.
