Cheapest decent 8-core I could find at the time.
If you're not too interested in overclocking or the absolute highest performance in general, then there's no reason to buy any recent Intel CPU more expensive than this one. The 10900 and 10900K have two more cores while the 11 series i7-11700K and i9-11900K are practically identical to the i7-10700K. If you need eight cores and pretty good clock speeds for the least money possible, this CPU might be for you.Notes - 4.8 GHz is the single-core boost clock. All-core boost settles in at 4.6 GHz. Only compatible with Socket 1200 motherboards (Intel 400 and 500 series chipsets). Maximum supported RAM speed is 2933, but this time around you CAN go higher on the non-K CPUs so don't worry if your RAM speed is 3200 or something. You can run it.
