I use these to adapt my VISCA cable from my HuddleCam controller to my Sony PTZ cameras. I can convert the DB9 signal to CAT cable which allows me to run inexpensive CAT cable for long distances instead of expensive specialized VISCA cables.

I needed to extend a serial cable over 100 feet. However this application is not typical. I needed it for an old school ADJ power controller. I thought I had a problem when one channel didn't work, taking the unit apart I discovered this was indeed old school. It was an 8 channel 12v relay system. Doing the math 8 channels would require 9 wires, cat6 only has 8, I'm just relieved it worked at all.
