Creepy🎃, spooky👻 yet addictive 🤯
Okay, I'm giving this book a solid five because the way the author narrated the stories. She is an excellent story teller for sure 🏕️ 🌨️🍵🫖 📖. I'm going to write my review by pros and cons.Pros 🏔️❄️☃️ 🌷:1. As I said earlier- excellent story narration 📖 🏕️ ☕.2. Sometimes I forgot that I was reading and I was in her world with all those characters 🌌🌝🏞️.3. She made a great effort 👏🏽 to keep the readers engaged 🧐🫨 throughout because as she mentioned, that these are the stories based on true events and she made sure not to present the stories blant 🍚 and she spiced them up very well 🍛🍲🍜🥘🧆.4. I'm not sure if I should add this point in pros but however, all those stories has a similar thing which is:the dead people were once happy 😊, joyful 😁, kind 🥰 souls but after their dismise they became vengeful 😡, bitter👺 and evil 👹except for a few 🍂. I wonder 🤔 what makes those souls so hollow 💀 and cold 🧊.5. Finally, the discription of the mountains and the forests of Shimla was breath taking wowwwwwww 🏔️🏔️🏔️⛰️🌳🌲🪵🍃☘️🌿🌱🍄 🏞️Cons 🌋🔥🏜️🌵:1. It made me sad when kids were involved and affected directly or indirectly. 😥☹️😞2. And at the end of some stories I felt dissatisfied for some reason maybe because she left it open-ended. 😑😑😑3. Some stories are hard to believe that it was based on true events because it felt very cinematic. 🙄 📸 📽️🎥Overall it was a best read. Very impressive 👍🏽

A book that will keep you hooked till the very end.
‘Ghosts of the Silent Hills’ is a book that popped up on my recommendation feed by Amazon while I was browsing for some horror books. I found the cover page interesting and also found out that it was a National Bestseller. Enough reasons for me to pick it up immediately. And, I have to admit that I am not disappointed after having read it. The stories are based on real folklore, legends and even true hauntings. The narration is lucid and flowing that’s what makes it even more alluring to go on reading. The stories start from the old times coming to a modern time towards the end. The first few stories are based on real ghost sightings and hauntings. The last few however seemed more animated to me, perhaps the setting might have made the difference. Although the writer has admitted that she has fictionalized the stories a bit but the Part one stories were really spine-chilling and scary.I would say, that the book remains true to its name, and the stories from the silent hills actually make you wonder whether next you should visit a mountain area or not, as I have heard many stories too from my in-laws being married into a Pahadi Household. They claim those to be true, so all the stories that I read in this book, I could relate with them all. However, I would recommend if you are a horror lover, then only read it, it's not a light read for everyone. The stories are vivid with great imagery and for me, it worked well, because I could actually visualise the scenes without much effort. There was not elaborate build-up for the apparitions or ghosts to appear in the scenario or the stories, they came just like that, within a few lines only. This keeps the interest even more intact because you already get the taste of what you are expecting from the book.I would say, give it a read once for sure, or gift it to someone you know who loves horror. This could be the next horror book they would surely like, ‘Ghosts of the Silent Hills’ by Anita Krishan.

Misnomer, So-so read, repititive too
Writing ghost stories for adults is a very difficult task. This book may be divided broadly into two parts. Hauntings in the mountains and hauntings in the city. Thus, the title is a misnomer. It is not just the hills but rather half the book is entirely about occurrences in cities like Delhi and Kolkata which are not exactly 'silent hills'.The first part which deals with the mountains, are reasonably decent. The descriptions given of the mountains are really nice and if you have been fortunate to visit any of these mountains, you can actually relate very well to the descriptions of the approaching dusk and how the mountains take a completely 180 degrees turn in the night from their cheerful and soulful nature during the day. That has been beautifully captured. Being a high altitude trekker myself, I can visualize it very well. The events, however, some could be predicted because of the way the story has been built and that kind of takes the element of surprise away from a ghost story.I think the author has tried to keep the stories open-ended, but then to me, there is a difference between leaving a story open-ended and leaving it incomplete. In most of the stories, the ending is abrupt and one would have expected something more to bring it to a conclusion (even if the conclusion could be open-ended).The city stories in part 2, they are in my personal opinion, ordinary and almost all of them show same occurrences. I am not an expert on investigating hauntings and it may well be the case that this is how all hauntings usually manifest themselves. To summarize, in my personal opinion, this is an average book, a nice fireside reading, the mountain stories are a shade better than the city stories. I wish the stories would have ended in a more logical pattern even if they are left to represent continuity of events or to let the reader draw their own conclusions, rather than sounding incomplete or unfinished. And yes, the publication quality is really bad with the ink smudged over the cheap pages. I wouldn't have mind paying a little more to have a better physical quality of book to add to my shelves. This almost looks like the Indian pirated version of foreign publications.
