Works well, if you speak into the little microphone box, which has a clip to attach it. My mother is almost deaf, but kept losing expensive little hearing aids in the nursing facility. These are easy to see and find and work just as well as her expensive ones. It does pick up a/c sounds, etc, so still best to reduce background noise when using.

I am a senior and got difficulty to listen to talk of relatively near distance. With this device I can listen to and understand talk. It is good. But problem is that, If I put it in my pocket, voice of myself is too big. So, it is better to put on a desk. But it is not stable, easy to fall over. Then I made stand with cardboard: see picture. It works. but if non-slip one is better.Volume mark: each time I need to search good volume. So, there should be numbers 1,2,3... on the volume dial. I marked a dot at the good volume point by marker. then it works well.After these additional works, it works very well.

The headphones stopped working within 1 day of use. Also the item has no filter so I could hear everything, such as the electric fan on my desk.

This unit is well worth the money as opposed to the lower prices Reizen unit. With the cheaper unit the ear buds fall out at the slightest movement. There is some static and crackling sounds. The better unit has comfortable headphones that stay on. The sound quality is much better quality. As with all amplifiers the less of the total amplification ability you have to use, the better the sound quality is. If course any personal amplifier will also pick up sounds in the room, but in a quiet place you will hear very well. Pay the extra and get the better Reizen. Use large safety pins to secure it to the arm of your easy chair.

I use this at lectures and plays to understand what is being said. Very sensitive to it rubbing on anything so hanging on your pocket and moving around will not work. I've noticed static in a classroom and wonder if it is the fluorescent lights. It is nice to hear the questions asked when the professor doesn't repeat the question or has his mike too low for me. Really nice in small venue plays without audio system. Just don't want to get hearing aids...yet.

Here's my review after using with my elderly mom over the past 3 months: this amplifier works well. The headphones that come with it are underwhelming, I highly recommend spending an extra few bucks on a set of basic over-the-ear headphones that give better coverage around the ears instead (amazon has them for about $10). Well worth it. Also a box of generic AAA batteries. They'll last a long time.When I first took the amplifier out of the box I thought that the build quality seemed cheap for the price I paid to be honest, but after 3 months of regular use with different headphones I actually have no complaints. It's small, lightweight, and gets the job done.

The only problem is hearing speakers while watching TV.

Update: I praised this in the beginning but soon realized it wasn't consistent after some use. You might get different results.
