This device works and it is compatible with other dell Inspiron models with the same build... but the device is missing the exterior stand bracket.

Great external device purchased back in 2007 and is still alive. I've been using it for my music, audio-book and photo collections.

I have had a real problem with this drive. It crashes when trying to write a large file to it - like a back up of my PC. That's what I'd gotten it for. I previously had a Maxtor One Touch w Firewire and liked it quite a lot when it was working. When that drive died (Hmmm - not the greatest experience, actually) I picked up this One Touch II. Going by my reading on the web, there is a problem with the chips used where by the buffer inside the drive overflow (or something along those lines). Maxtor offers a program on their web site for the Fire Wire version to flash those bios but not for the USB version.I also verified that it had this problem on another machine.

When the device runs it runs well.However, and I am not lying as suggested, I have lost data 4 times.It happended 3 times on a previous Maxtor I got from Costco, which I returned, and I got another and it just happended again.This is in a 12 month time period.It loses the partition, which needs to be re-created and reformated.After that it seem sas nothing happened. So I believe that data loss issues are real.It has been suggested by some that these devices should not be left on due to heat build-up. I am not sure if that is the issue.I am reasonably computer literate, being a computer consultant.
