THE IMAGE by Michael Freeman (Collins Photography Workshop Series)
This second volume in the Collins Photography Workshop Series deals with photographic composition and design. Many different aspects are covered; there are sub-sections on colour theory, the dynamics of the frame, visual weight, proportion, balance, lines of view, reprise, dynamic tension and more. The success or failure of a book like this depends on the quality of the examples, since if these are poor the reader has little reason to think that they will be able to do better as a result of reading the book. But this is not a problem here; the examples are mostly good to excellent and they illustrate the text quite effectively.

The Image and nothing but the image
This book deals with the image and the making of it. No matter whether you're using film or digital or painting a cave wall with your big toe, this book is worth reading as it contains valuable pointers to getting it right.I've just read it for the third time in twenty years and can thoroughly recommend it - it's pretty timeless and even though it was first published in 1988 it stands the test of time easily. All the articles in it apply just as well today as they did then, as they aren't really equipment-related.In short, it's a bargain, buy it - you won't regret it.
