Why do so many people want to kill the nearly naked man?
The Field told a short story in a four issue run, collected here in a single volume. A nearly naked man finds a cellphone in a field. Why the man is not entirely naked is never explained, but I can let that slide. Text messages tell the nearly naked man to flee from the man in a car who is chasing him through the field. The nearly naked man seems puzzled by his presence in the field, by the phone, and by the nefarious driver, who turns out to be a Bible salesman. The salesman abhors blasphemy but doesn't mind doing some lines of coke or shagging the over-the-hill waitress at the diner or, well, shooting everyone in sight. As if the nearly naked man didn't have enough problems, a motorcycle gang and a group called "Tomorrow People" are pursuing him with malicious intent.By issue 2 the reader begins to get an idea of the role the nearly naked man (now known as Grant or "the Source") is playing is this perverted version of reality and why so many people want to take control of him ... or kill him. In issue 3 we get a quasi science fictiony explanation for what is transpiring and in the final issue ... well, not much of a resolution, really, but that's intentional. This isn't the most original story I've encountered -- it riffs on a theme that is common in sf -- but I like the way it's executed. Characterizations are strong and the story moves along without wasting any panels. The art captures the essence of the story. The usual "extras" are appended but they don't add much. I enjoyed reading it and on Amazon, that means it gets 4 stars, but maybe a weak 4 stars.

The Field
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.A man clad just in his underwear, finds himself in the middle of a field, not knowing how he got there. He is ‘rescued’ by Christian, a psychotic ex bible salesman and taken to where Christian thinks he will be safe. Several groups are out to obtain or kill the amnesiac man, they call him ‘the source’ and all have very different reasons for wanting to get to him. This book collects four issues, by the ending of the book I’m not sure if there are any more planned which would be a shame as it turned out to be an engrossing read. It didn’t start off too well however, the first issue was confusing and if this had been the quality of the rest of it, it would have rated poorly. Luckily from the second issue on it really found its feet, nicely paced with the story coming together as more was explained. There was a lot of violence which was quite graphic, I enjoyed this but it’s definitely for adult readers and may not be for everyone. The artwork was also something that I thought improved after the first issue, the detail in some of the later panels was done really well, the artwork fitted the storyline and I enjoyed the raw quality of it.I’m hoping there is more to the story as plenty of questions were left unanswered. I’d definitely recommend this to graphic novel fans.

Crazy, over the top and fast paced. By the end, not a lot has happened, but stay tuned.
'The Field' written by Ed Brisson and with art by Simon Roy is fast and over the top. It has some strange twists and turns, but I ended up liking it.An amnesiac wakes up in a field in just his underwear. Nearby, a phone starts ringing and sending him text messages from someone unknown. The first message warns him about getting in the car that's coming for him, but he finds himself getting in the car anyway. He finds himself in the company of a crazy person who thinks the underwear clad guy is important. The story gets violent and strange before it's done with a crazy Bible salesman, bikers and violent Trekkie cosplayers. It's a fun ride and I liked it, but it doesn't complete in these first four issues. Where the story is left is a little disatisfying, but I'd read the next volume. The art is a bit garish, but that totally fits the over the top story elements. Violence and profanity abound, so reader beware.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Image Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

A violent action packed chase story that starts fast and then picks up speed!
This review will intentionally be very short to avoid providing too many "spoilers". If you read this book, and I think you should, you will see why I was concerned about revealing too much and spoiling it. This is a story about an amnesiac who wakes up in a field and finds himself being hunted by many different groups. They call him the "source" and some want to kill him while others desperately want to keep him alive. He doesn't know what is going on but he does know the world isn't right in that violence and hedonism seem to be everywhere. He has to survive long enough to regain his memory or at least figure out why he is so important and who, if anyone, he should trust.Even though the ending is very predictable and the art is basic at best, I nevertheless enjoyed this book for I found it to be exciting and darkly funny. It is a quick read for it is an action packed chase story that starts fast and picks up speed from there....plus it is only 102 pages long not counting the obligatory extra graphic novel stuff. This graphic novel collects the four issues of the stand alone Image series; it contains a lot of profanity and is extremely violent. Consequently, I do not think it is suitable for anyone under 17.I primarily review graphic novels and my rating system is simple. Five stars for books that I couldn't put down and read from start to finish in one sitting. Four stars for excellent books that I highly recommend and will continue reading myself. Three stars for books I liked and may recommend. Two stars and below for books I would not recommend.I hope this review helped. If it did, please click the yes button below.
