Pretty good book, but marred by reliance on Z Shell and the author's own customizations
This is a very good book for learning the basics (and beyond) of Vim, but just as an FYI to anyone who wants to buy this book: you will be working with McDonnell's personal Vim resource files which provides a pretty nice out-of-the-box experience. Unfortunately, you will also be using the Z Shell, whether you want to use the Z Shell or not, and I think this was a bit of a mistake. Like a lot of people, I have honed my bash setup over a long period of time, and having to deal with a new shell was a major inconvenience, and as a result, I wasn't really able to get any work done. Until a better book comes out (i.e., one that doesn't impose it's choice of shell on the user), the built-in documentation is actually really good, and there are plenty of free resources out there (r/vim on Reddit, the Wikia pages, Stack Overflow) to get help. One last gripe: Instead of using McDonnell's out-of-the-box solution, there are at least two vimrc packages on github that are fairly popular, and using those would have been better since more than one programmer (and the readers of his books) actually use them. Even better, I think, would have been to just start with a blank slate and add bits and pieces into the .vimrc as the book progressed, so you would start with Pathogen, adding plug-ins for each chapter as new topics came up.
