A Street Car Named Desire is a marvelous piece written by Tennessee Williams. Before this book, this story was originally a play that debuted on December 3rd, 1947 at the Ethel Barrymore theater. The story is controversial and does an excellent job at showing what things were like for some people and the struggles they faced in New Orleans in the late 1940s. Most of the characters are all about desire and illusion. They have bold personalities which keeps the story line interesting. Blanche Dubois is desperate to find a man to take her hand by any means necessary, while her sister Stella Kowalski is loving and extremely tolerant. Stella seems helpless and many times has violent conflicts with her husband which routinely end in heated passion. Stanley Kowalski, Stella’s husband is abusive and driven by his animal like desires. Blanche Dubois commonly points out Stanley’s nature saying he is ape-like and primitive. Blanche uses illusion throughout the story to get what she wants and hide her darker side from others. Mitchell referred to as Mitch is more of a side character that shows gentlemen like qualities but later shows what can happen when a man is hurt and lied to. The story’s use of symbolism and metaphors really show the connection the author wants to create with his readers. The actual, “streetcars” that are named Desire and Cemeteries, are major symbols of the characters in this story and their desires and the consequences of their desires. The paper lantern Mitch puts over a light displays Blanche’s illusion and how she wants to hide her true self to appear more desirable towards Mitch. Despite social equality improving some in todays world, the circumstances that some of the characters faced are still very real and this could be a sensitive read for some. Overall a streetcar named desire is an amazing story that even today, is still very popular and shows how even as time goes on the story still feels modern and relevant.

Excellent play, truly a classic. The book arrived on time (a little before expected actually), and I tore through the screen play within a day or two. Now if only it were showing nearby...

Book arrived very soon after I placed my order. It was in wonderful condition. Great book. Movie is amazing. I already read the entire thing only days after I recieved it. I just couldnt put it down.

the book is actually for my son, but no apparent problems with the book.glad i was able to find it.
