A Footnote on the Career of Steve Reeves
I ordered this one only because it serves a s a footnote to the career of Steve Reeves. The plot is virtually nonexistent and Reeves has a small part as a bodybuilder who gets trounced by the male lead in ridiculous fashion. There's even a pad on the floor for him to fall onto. The movie was one of only two films he was featured in where his own voice was used. (The other being Ed Woods' Jailbait.) Debbie Reynolds is as beautiful as ever, and this movie provided a chance for Reeves to get noticed. He was subsequently cast in the first of the sword and sandal movies, Hercules, which started his movie star career.

If you love old musicals.
You might have missed this little 'gem' from years ago. The plot is simple enough, and the music is cleverand entertaining. I had never seen it before. I like it so much that I purchased it in the Amazon Cloud and then purchased the DVD and had it sent to a friend of mine. She also loves old musicals. She loved it too. She hadnever seen it before either. Give it a try. You might agree with my friend and I.

Glossy colorful nonsense with excellent musical score
Well made rubbish, worth seeing as an illustration of the technical expertise and sheer hard work put in by all concerned busily trying to make an acceptable piece of entertainment out of a terrible idea and an appalling script. What makes the whole thing worthwhile is the exceptionally good Martin and Blane score, which everyone performs enthusiastically. The most enjoyable part of this well produced DVD is the special feature of the beautiful duet Edmund Purdom has with Jane Powell, which was cut from the picture by some numbskull who thought he was improving it, when this should surely have been the highlight, even though the sentiment level might lead to some members of the audience having to have treatment for diabetes. "Venezia" is also a good song in the classical show style nicely sung by Vic Damone, who also recorded and filmed "Faster Than Sound", another splendid number that was cut, but unfortunately is not included in the Special features as I was hoping it would be. Despite its imperfections I'm glad I bought it. I consider it an oddity worth adding to my collection..

Not horrible
What can I say, it's a bit of an oddball script but the acting seems to keep tings somewhat interesting. Debbie Reynolds always provides a lift to everything she is in. But, it's not anything I'd ever watch again.

Another MGM musical gem uncovered
For those who love to watch or read about MGM musicals, Athena is a real treat. I first learned about it when Rhino Records released the newly remastered soundtrack some time ago. It may not be MGM's top musical, but it's great to revisit the MGM talent in a very good original film musical which was perhaps 20 years ahead of its time. The theme deals with healthy lifestyle living and nutrition. Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, and Vic Damone are at their peak and watch for Steve Reeves, better known for his Hercules film role. Great score by Meet Me In St. Louis team Martin and Blane. The tune Vocalize is one you will hum for days after first hearing. MGM musical fans enjoy!

Giving it a Reluctant 3 Stars
Edmund Purdom plays a Lawyer of dry wit and full of pomposity...Vic Damone plays a TV and Night Club singer..They romance two sisters played by Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds....Louis Calhern is the Patriarch obsessed with health and fitness and is convinced that Astrology determines the future and the key to happiness......The numbers and stars in the sky suggest that Purdom/Powell, Damone/Reynolds are made for each other....However, the men need to drastically change their lifestyle to meet the ideals of healthy living..Most musicals have flimsy stories and believe me, this one is wafer thin....I honestly can't imagine it did too well at the Box Office in 1954 and the appeal was probably to the very young...The musical and dance numbers were very disappointing...Yes,Jane Powell looks and sings beautifully...."Love Can Change the Stars and Chacun Le Sait, from Daughters of the Regiment" are two I remember....Great voice of Vic Damone sings "The Boy Next Door" from Meet me in St. Louis, and "Venezia" on the back of a nice production number...Debbie Reynolds does a duet with Damone but is totally wasted....Steve Reeves, the real Mr. Universe of 1950,head a team of singing and dancing muscle men!....It has good sound and a nice print with colour by Eastman Colour,.For me the essential of a musical is that it's repeatable..Most of this is forgettable..I honestly don't think this one will get much wear and tear...But if I could I'd like to edit out and watch about 15 mins at most, and that's not much in a musical that runs for 113 mins! ......Star rating...I'd like to give it 2 &1/2 but I can't....Giving it a 2 means I didn't like it.....But I loved the voices of Powell and Damone.....I loved the Nostalgia...So I'm giving it a 3 star...I just want you to know the reason why..JJI

A different and mostly enjoyable light musical with an unusual story. A must see rare delight!
Truly a wonderful MGM film which addressed change from the 'older' types of musicals and into bringing into focus elements of then current public awareness of exercise, body building, natural foods and a bit of astrology. . Casting some it's celebrated musical stars and a few newer ones, this fun and highly entertaining romp offers mostly new songs, all well sung and presented. I am delighted to have seen the newly enhancedWarner re-issue of this all but forgotten treasure. Thank you

dilivery was on time.
Iwas a bit disapointed with the film as the review said it was as good as seven brides for seven brothers, and I dont think it comes any where near as good as it,as that is one of my favorite films
