Yes, We Treat Aardvarks - Stories from an Extraordinary Veterinary Practice

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
I bought this book because I love vet medicine stories and love all the books by Dr. James Herriot. At first I put this book aside, then, while camping I came across it on my kindle and decided this would be a good book to read while camping. You know the kind, I will not have to concentrate on it much and I can pick it up, and put it down easily and not lose my place much. Boy, was I wrong. I always like to read the preface to see if I want to hang with a book. Would you believe there was my fav vet, Dr. James Herriot whose books I have read over and over. I get the same big laughs every time I take part in his adventures. I have not found a vet book to compare with his stories until now. Dr. Miller,s stories bring you right into the action. It is hard to pick a fav story but I think the chimpanzee saga was the best. I started reading. This morning and had 5 hours and some few minutes to the end of the book (the new Kindles have that now) and at 11:35 pm I had 42 minutes left to finish but couldn't hold my eyes open any more. And, this is the first time I have ever been inspired to write a book review because I thought Dr. Miller would understand if it didn't make to good a sense after all of the situations he has experienced in his practice. Lol

I love vet books - some formatting issues
I really enjoyed the anecdotes but there were distracting formatting errors in the kindle version. The author apparently produced cartoons for vet journals in addition to his practice, and a number were included in the book. I tried all the font sizes but many of the cartoons did not have captions which were readable. Grumpiness!! Also, in just about every sentence there were hyphenated words that appeared mid-sentence etc and had no obvious purpose. Again, I tried different font sizes thinking that these words were meant to be placed at the end of a sentence.....no success. Despite these distractions, I whipped through the book and thoroughly enjoyed the stories. Introduction by James Herriot. If you enjoyed this book, search out the series of book by David Taylor. Like this book, he dealt with exotics and zoo animals in addition to the typical domestic pet critters. Unfortunately, none of Taylor's books have been put into kindle format (yet). Start with:Β Zoo Vet: Adventures of a Wild Animal Doctor

but fun when we took our bikes and could coast all ...
I grew up in Ventura county and spent many long summer days walking from Oxnard to T-Oaks. The Conejo grade was always a challenge, but fun when we took our bikes and could coast all the way down. Yeah it was along ways, but Jockey Mead's Meadowbrook Plunge was the only accessible swimming pool in the whole area. For the most part we stayed away from the wild animal park, which in my day was known as Clyde Beatty's Wild Animal Park. Always afraid a lion would get lose, or something else. Nostalgia from this book was a fun go around for me. I'm glad he wrote this story, and glad for the memories.

Delightful read!
Dr. Miller is a very good writer, and from his writings, obviously an excellent veterinarian. I loved reading about his adventures establishing a practice and practicing at a time where things were very different with respect to exotic animal husbandry. Reading about pioneering adventures in practice with cetaceans was fascinating. It makes me wish I could have worked with Dr Miller in those early days! Dr Miller"s care and compassion shows through in his writing. This is a great book by a great veterinarian and writer -- and cartoonist - I am inspired to get some books of his cartoon work from the sampling in this book.

Must read for animal lovers
After James Herriott, RMM is my favorite veterinary author. These stories are memorable both because of the amazing content and because they are so well written. Highly recommended for all animal lovers.

Yea, We Treat Aardvarks by Robert M. Miller DVM
This is well written, anecdotal, short book describing some of the situations in which a veterinarian can find himself when dealing with a variety of animals and the humans who are associated with their care. The humor is pervasive and gentle in nature although it is also mixed with stories of potentially dangerous consequences. I appreciated the forthright descriptions and bits of education which helped give the reader a more complete understanding of some of the situations. Much the same style as the writings of James Harriot.

Great book ... inexcusable proofreading.
This is a five star book with by far the worst proofreading I've ever seen. It's not just annoying, it's infuriating. As to the book, Miller is possibly unique in his experience, and he's an excellent storyteller. I would highly recommend the book to anybody with even a vague interest in animals or veterinary medicine, especially Herriot fans looking for something like yet completely different ... but they'd better have the patience of a saint when it comes to formatting errors and mis-spellings.

It was a good book and I would recommend
I found the collection of stories interesting and even amusing. This vet's practice was set in a different time era and some of the stories were difficult to take regarding the treatment of animals but that's must be what they did back then. The exotic animal stories were very interesting and I had heard the chimp warnings before. It was a good book and I would recommend it

Fascinating
A Californian James Herriot. This is a really interesting book written a while ago (James Herriot wrote the preface) about the authors practice in 1950's and 1960's California. A compassionate and intellegent account of the people and animals he met and treated, including a bison who had a copy of the New York Times removed from his stomach and Daryl the Twentieth Century fox.The only problem is that I read the Kindle edition of this and it has a lot of blank pages between chapters and a lot of inappropriate hyphens in the middle of words which was very annoying.
