Planning Scenery for Your Model Railroad: How to Use Nature for Modeling Realism
P**T
Not just another scenery manual
As the name of this title suggests, planning scenery is vital to establish a feel for any layout that you are attempting to build. Generally in the past you would construct a landscape and then populate it with structures and details and end up with a nice looking scene. But would that scene actually be consistent with what you are trying to model. This book looks and guides you through the process of determining the correct amount of prototype scenery that you need and by selectively compressing the scene, you will build a far more believable and context correct representation of the locale you are trying to model. The subject matter is often thought provoking enough to make you reconsider your direction and or make you look at some scenes again in a more analytical way.Whilst this book is not a compendium of modeling techniques or processes, it has a broad overview of the basics that you will need to consider. After all, if you seek realism in your scenery, the least you need to consider is a planned approach before you start.

Double check waht this is about
Be ware that this is "Planning Scenery" and not necessarily how to do the scenery. There are a few suggestions about the actual doing but mostly there are references to old issues of Model Railroader, etc. This book was published in 2007 and there are many references to web sites but so far out of 9 I tried only one is still active. If you are a Serious (capital S) model railroader this is good prototype info. If you just like the way the kits look and enjoy including them on your layout you'll probably feel guilty by they time you finish this book. If you plan on trying to purchase all the manuals he refers to have your credit card handy.

Helpful
This has a number of very useful ideas and methods and I think it is well worth the money. I would recommend it. It covers a number of approaches to scenery and makes a good addition to one's library on terrain and lanscape building.

Just what he wanted!
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas; it was exactly what he was looking for to help in planning his model railroad. He's been building model buildings for years, and this will help him decide on the placement of these structures on a layout and how to build the layout itself. He's a real perfectionist and wants to make sure that the scenery looks as realistic as possible.

Great ideas on different types of scenery and how to
Enjoyed this book and offers different ways and ideas of where to add scenery and explains how to do it. Lots of real pictures and how to simulate them into model form. Another great addition into my model railroad "how to" library. I would recommend this for just starting or middle of the road modeler.

Model roads
Lots of photos but not always "how to do" step-by-step. Satisfied much of my curious nature. Best to "ask around" and learn by doing. Nice.
